I mentioned before that I signed up for Vacation Races’ virtual race on April 25 (or whenever you want to run) called “Stay Home.” It’s free, unless you want a shirt, medal, etc. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Wander Project, which supports our National Park Communities.
I need something. I was more bummed my race was rescheduled last Saturday than I thought. This gives me something to work towards. I even bugged my hubby (he said nope), & my siblings (some said yes) to run it too. One sibling is in Utah, while the rest of us are here in Vegas. I told them we can run the half alone or within 6 feet of each other! 😜We’ll see how it goes!
I usually run alone, so my running life hasn’t changed much. I have seen less people out this week though. Hmmmm. 🤷🏻♀️
That would be awesome if you could run it (relatively) close to one another -- it would feel a little more "real," I bet. These days, I mostly run alone too, but I'm still seeing quite a few people out when I'm running -- of course, the weather here has been pretty spectacular this week (except for yesterday!). Are you running the 13.1 miles for the Stay Home Half? Or another distance?
I've signed-up for the "Stay Home" virtual because this is truly making lemonade out of a lemon situation. The message on the shirt is clever. I even selected my bib number as "042520", which is the official run date. I've mapped out my 13.1 mile route and as soon as the shirt and bib arrive, I'm going to race. I'll even win, since I'm running by myself (LOL, LOL).
I'm doing the Social Distancing Virtual Run put on by Orca Running out of the Seattle area. I first saw this race on the Half Marathoner, so thanks for the head's up on this. Orca Running is a small business whose purpose is to organize and put on road and trail races throughout the year. Unfortunately, the virus has cancelled a good portion of their races, and business for this year. I feel that by signing up and running, I am in a small way helping a small local business. Their fee is small, and the website and weekly updates for training have been both entertaining and very motivating.
I'm so glad you're doing that, Beth. There are a number of races that may not continue if they're not able to raise some revenue this year; I'm going to look into running one as well.
i've been running alone in my neighborhood more. i do plan to do a social distance run with my running partner on saturday, simply because i don't want to run 10 miles alone. i think these virtual runs where you pay to run are just a little silly. just my opinion but if i sign up for a race i want to go and do the race course. more fulfilling for me.
Oh, I totally hear you on that. I think it can be a way to still be part of an event that means something to you, though -- you'll get the medal, the bib and (a sense of) being part of something bigger. But I hear you, if the cost for a virtual event is more than nominal, that's probably asking too much.
I'm still running trails, my neighborhood, and the Greenway. The Greenway has been pretty crowded lately, so I'm trying to run it when fewer people are around. Hard to practice social distancing otherwise.
I run alone too. Years ago I joined a running group and on one particular day, they changed the route to one I had never done. Long story short... they left me. I’m pretty good with directions and was able to get myself back to the store but no one came looking for me. That was the end of group running for me. I’ve been running/walking everyday since all the stay at home began. I see lots of people out and most are good about the social distancing.
I need that time alone as I’m spending all my work time on conference calls and virtual training. It gives me peace and the quiet I need for ME!
Love that you're finding the peace and quiet you need during this time -- are you in health care, btw? (I just saw your photo and it looked like you're wearing scrubs; if so, we're all thinking of you right now!)
I am in healthcare. I have worked for JNJ for the last 20 years in their medical device division. I’m normally in the OR all day helping as a resource for the surgeons and nurses In surgery. I miss them all and hope they are well. Good eye.....
The plan is to focus on running and other gym-free activities. I have a great calorie burning workout series I can do at home, but it is wonderful to get outside for a run. I am also trying to do more relaxing activities such as yoga.
I, too, have been trying to do 5K a day. (I missed one, but whatever, I'm going to go easy on myself right now). I usually run along the ocean, but since those routes are all closed, it's forced me to discover new routes, and I've been enjoying seeing more of my community, and saying hi and waving to all the folks working in their garages working, the kids playing in the yard, the essential workers like trash collectors driving by.
I've also registered for the Uncanceled Project, which is putting on virtual races for free. Figured it might be good to have a little something for motivation.
I go jogging outside at least three times a week. Other days, I'll cross-train indoors by watching videos on boxing drills and ab workouts. I usually run solo, so not much has changed on that front. I highly recommend using this time to try other forms of fitness. On YouTube, there's an entire world of videos for boxing, conditioning, yoga, and more. During shelter in place, I started doing yoga, which has been relaxing and helps with stretching.

Glad your weather has been nice! It’s finally nicer here too.

LOVE that, Belle! Definitely is a time to make lemonade out of lemons, isn't it?
