This past weekend was “race day” for the half marathon training you’ve been seeing each Wednesday since the start of the year — if you participated and ran your 13.1 miles this weekend, how did it go? Where did you run? How did you celebrate?
Even if you didn’t participate, and ran another race or just got out and enjoyed a great run this weekend, I’d love to hear all about it 🙌 — Terrell
P.S.: And speaking of inspirational running, did y’all see Rich Strike in the Derby on Saturday? Oh wow was it amazing.
I ran the Lisbon Half like Jackie and ditto what she said! I had taken my worse running fall EVER when we got to Portugal and thought that was that for the race. Thankfully almost healed by race day...awesome to run in a foreign city, albeit HOT and no shade...I get heat exhaustion easily. So I took it nice and slow, used a wet washcloth, drank tons of water and was smiling at the finish! Great medal too.
I ran the Indy Mini challenge (5k, then Half) this past weekend! It was great to meet up with other runners from this Half Marathoner community! The weather was perfect and the race was fun! I was shocked to see how narrow the Indy 500 Speedway track is, whoa! I have a new found respect for those drivers! Very cool to run on the track though 😊! And many runners did kiss the “bricks” on that track - a bit of history there. Thank you Terrell for organizing this running community - it’s great to meet others who share the same passion as I do!
My half marathon was cancelled on the morning of the race. It was the Des Moines Half Woman's. All the runners were there but a severe thunderstorm hit the city so the race was moved to virtual. It was a bummer after preparing for weeks but I ran the half later in the day and turned my time in. Luckily, I had also signed up for another half in a couple of weeks so hopefully I will be able to participate in that one.
Ran Yosemite Half with my son, his friend & my running buddy of almost two decades. It was an awesome race! And, the 18-week training plan we followed served us well. We all had great races!
Did the half a few years back … views were spectacular and the last three miles were all downhill. One of the better races … cool having pigpens instead of corrals!
This past Saturday I ran the Michigan Made Half, It was all trails and back roads. It's a great race if you're a cross country runner... which I am not; it was a tough race, but fair It was a very nice, well run first year race
My hubby showed me the video of Rich Strike & I cheered! That was an amazing race! (Kinda gave me hope about my slow running self. Maybe one day everything will line up & I’ll kick it into gear & beat my fastest time!) 👍🏼
Did not go to the Derby but what an exciting time. We did, however, attend Thunder over Louisville which starts off the 2-week derby celebration. Well worth your time with an amazing airshow, including the Raptor and Srealth bomber. At dark there is a large fireworks show which is shot off the 2nd street bridge and barges in the Ohio. All synchronized to music. This year there was a drone show as well. We were privileged in that our son-in-law is a Lt Col in the KY Air National Guard. He got us clearance to tour all the planes prior to the show. We so enjoyed getting up close and personal and are so proud of him. If you’re interested, the public can get tickets to do the same on Sun after the show.
I ran the Lisbon Half, which was ridiculously hot but was such a buzzy, friendly, well-organised event.
It’s the first in the super-halfs series which may be of interest if anyone fancies a European challenge… it’s like the marathon majors but for halfs. Lisbon, Copenhagen, Valencia, Prague and Cardiff to be completed within a 36 month span.
I ran the Indy Mini with my daughter. A very well organized event that has over 20,000 runners and great community support. Enjoyed the experience of running with my daughter, even though she probably ran an additional 5 miles by literally running in circles around me at time so we could be running together the entire race. This 62 year old guy cant run as fast as my 29 year old daughter.
I ran my third half and got my best time yet. Completed Maine Coast Half Marathon and it was super windy but I felt great and was happy with my time. Now looking to start training for a full marathon in October. After this last half I'm pretty excited to do a full. Thanks for the motivation to train and challenge myself!!
26.2 coming up this Saturday (virtual due to scheduling conflicts). This is my first time running a virtual full marathon so I'm a bit nervous at the lack of motivation from crowds, cheering, etc. It will be just me, the sound of my feet hitting the pavement, and trying to keep my mind disciplined and focused--to keep it from "running" away with me.
During Covid19, I ran a number of virtual half marathons … my music keeps me motivated as well as the Saturday walkers, joggers, bikers and locals walking their dogs. Best wishes for a great marathon.
Good luck this weekend, Caroline! Carissa Liebowitz, a writer and runner who's a great friend of THM, wrote this a couple of years ago about completing the virtual Boston Marathon, during the summer of 2020. It might give you some ideas for yours: https://www.thehalfmarathoner.com/p/running-boston-in-georgia
I also ran the mini this weekend. It was my 3rd time but last ran it 17 years ago. My goal was to run another 1/2 before I turn 50 in a few months. I did good considering my training fell a bit short. I believe this was my best time of the 3. I felt better crossing the finish line than I did in my 20’s and 30’s which was the biggest win for me. I ran a 12k in Big Sur 2 weeks ago which was all up or down hill. It was interesting because both races were challenging but in different ways.
Just started my 5K May. 2 down 6 to go. Having a blast with the shorter distance and smaller crowds. Hope to break the 26 minute mark before moving on to the 10k’s. My half marathons do not return until August. Good luck to all!
Love those horses. . . the odds were phenomenal for Rich Strike, but he did it!! I think he was just having fun!! The Derby never fails with excitement. Course, I love racing, riding and horses. . . I cheer for the underdogs and it's so satisfying to see one win!
Had to lay off running for awhile. My body decided to take a rest. We'll stay put for 6 months and see what happens with housing. Stress does get to one, especially after looking for a place to live. . . I'm not in my 50s or 60s anymore!! That was a breeze!
Been out walking on the Trail a few miles/day. It's still just as beautiful with the dogwood and roses blooming. Cold, though, in the 40s. Give me a little time and I'll recoup my energy.
Congrats to all who did the 13.1. I was with you in spirit! :)
I attempted to run the Brooklyn Mara two weeks ago, but around mile 9 it was clear my plantar fasciitis was not totally healed. I ran the rest in pain to finish the half instead. I got a medal! It was weird though bc I felt like I had more to do. The next half I train for I am going to train till 14 miles bc it was a better way to finish. No running for me for at least another 2 weeks. Will cautiously start again after that. Even though I didn’t finish the full I am proud of myself that I was able to push through and finish the half.
I had to pull up from running 13.1 this weekend too, as my last few runs I've been experiencing a variety of different (and sometimes very sharp) pains on the bottom of my left foot. I'm afraid it's plantar fasciitis too. Caution is my watchword too.
I ran a half marathon on April 16th and did another half on May 1st. I ran both races during torrential downpours and finished well. I prefer to run in the rain rather than in the heat so they were two great runs and I look forward to my next half....this summer.
I did fine until about 10 miles and my body started to feel weak. I could not sprint at the end at all. All weekend I felt sick. I feel better today, but yesterday I felt like I had the flu or something.
No race this weekend but Congratulations to you all who did!! :) Awesome job!! 12 mile trail run for me and it was awesome to be in the woods-so green and energizing.
I ran the Indy mini on Saturday. It was a great weather morning overall. Being around so many runners again felt phenomenal.
The spectators and musicians etc lining the race route was also something I’ve missed. Running over the yard of bricks at the 500 track never gets old.
I felt pretty good considering all the challenges I had getting my training runs in.
Yes I did watch The Kentucky Derby and what a finish for "Rich Strike" - exciting to see. I changed my usual route this weekend and ran 4.4 miles (my longest run in a long time) Slow, but good. Temps in the 40's, perfect !
I maybe the odd one, but I like running when it's warm... Being from Minnesota, I always ran bundled up... here in Florida, I dress in as little as possible...
I ran the Indy Mini this weekend, and the weather was perfect! We had the opportunity to run a lap on the Indy 500 track which was pretty amazing and something I won't forget anytime soon!
Isn't that always the case? Most of the time I find the wind is blowing in some direction... I like it when it's on by back at the end of the race.... by then I need all the help I can get... LOL
How was running on the track? I've read about that race for years and always wanted to do it. And how was the turnout for it? (I think in years past, it's been one of the biggest races in the world in terms of the number of people participating.)
I think they said there were 20,000 runners so it was definitely a popular race! But everything about it from the Expo to the support and entertainment along the course to the post-race part was excellent - highly recommend! Running on the track was challenging (the first straight-a-way was like a wind tunnel) but so worth it!

Heart-breaking. Glad that at least you ran virtually.
Ran 13.1 on Sunday in my area. I had a blast!
Noticed on Strava that a whole lot of Half Marathoner folks did the Indy Mini. It was almost a Half Marathoner Half!
Ran Yosemite Half with my son, his friend & my running buddy of almost two decades. It was an awesome race! And, the 18-week training plan we followed served us well. We all had great races!
Ran the Flying Pig Half Marathon in Cincinnati on May 1st. The hills are absolutely awful, but it is a really fun race with amazing crowd support.
Slugged through a 5 miler Sunday! Just getting back out after not running for a month! It’s a grind getting lost fitness back! 😩
I, too, did a five-miler … my oh my, it’s gettin hot in South Florida!
Good for you Dave!👊🏾
That’s okay! It’s good to hear your running again after a break. Five miles is huge! 🙌
Thx T! Half training starts in July for a Sept. race
My hubby showed me the video of Rich Strike & I cheered! That was an amazing race! (Kinda gave me hope about my slow running self. Maybe one day everything will line up & I’ll kick it into gear & beat my fastest time!) 👍🏼

Oh and I forgot. They start off the fireworks by flying a huge American flag over the Ohio River with a spotlight on it. Chills!
I ran the Lisbon Half, which was ridiculously hot but was such a buzzy, friendly, well-organised event.

OMG! I ran it too...and agree...super friendly, totally disorganized at the start, but awesome course support and thankfully flat!
I ran the Indy Mini with my daughter. A very well organized event that has over 20,000 runners and great community support. Nilima, walking is good both for fitness and the soul. Keep it up.
So true, Susan! Calms the mind, too! :)

I haven't had plantars in a million years...I don't envy you running with it...
I had to pull up from running 13.1 this weekend too, as my last few runs I've been experiencing a variety of different (and sometimes very sharp) pains on the bottom of my left foot. I'm afraid it's plantar fasciitis too. Caution is my watchword too.
I hope that you are both back to running soon. Injuries are frustrating.
Thank you!
Yea that pain is not fun. Happy healing
I ran a half marathon on April 16th and did another half on May 1st. I ran both races during torrential downpours and finished well. I prefer to run in the rain rather than in the heat so they were two great runs and I look forward to my next half....this summer.
I have done the Fort Lauderdale A1A 14 years now … I d remember one year when it did rain from Mile 5 to the finish. Much better than hot/humid!
I totally agree...If you need water you can lean your head back and get a mouthful...
I love the optimism about running in the rain -- what part of the country/world did you run them in?
Western PA
I ran the Trails and Tails Half in Tallahassee. I survived. I will not do that again until I have lost 20 lbs. Wow!
At least you did it and survived!!!
Yikes! Wow -- what was it like?
I did fine until about 10 miles and my body started to feel weak. I could not sprint at the end at all. All weekend I felt sick. I feel better today, but yesterday I felt like I had the flu or something.
I ran my half in DC on a gravel trail between two bodies of water during a rainy weekend of flood warnings. It was tough, but I did it!
I don't mind running in a light rain... but a downpour??? I look for shelter...
Yikes! You get the die-hard award, Zoe! That takes dedication -- I'm seriously impressed 🙌
No race this weekend but Congratulations to you all who did!! :) Awesome job!! 12 mile trail run for me and it was awesome to be in the woods-so green and energizing.
That's awesome, Julie!! 🙌

I love to run a race where there is a lot of excitement... I run better when I'm totally in the groove...
That's so cool! (About the race) And big props to you for getting all the training runs in -- was scheduling them difficult?
Thanks
Life has been an adventure the past 6 months or so. Scheduling them was easy, keeping them at the top of the priority pile has been hard

Nice! Yes, I've watched the Derby replay on YouTube again and again -- just amazing.
I ran the Indy Mini this weekend, and the weather was perfect! We had the opportunity to run a lap on the Indy 500 track which was pretty amazing and something I won't forget anytime soon!
Tell ne you dropped the hammer down of the straight-a-ways !!! LOL
I did my best on the part that wasn't into the wind! lol
Isn't that always the case? Most of the time I find the wind is blowing in some direction... I like it when it's on by back at the end of the race.... by then I need all the help I can get... LOL
exactly!
