We had such a great discussion last Friday — as we have in past weeks too! — but this morning, it dawned on me that I’ve been the one picking all the topics for our Friday chats these past several months.
So, I’d love to ask what’s on your mind, what’s a question or topic that would get you talking, or you’re curious about that you’d like us to explore?
I love the reading recommendations. I read Sherman and Fast Girls thanks to you. I also appreciate the race suggestions that I might not otherwise have known about. Like Natural Bridges Cavern half, so much fun that I would have missed out on if not for your suggestion.
Kansa Bowl massage is usually given to the feet only to improve blood circulation, is it good for runners on a daily basis which helps enhancing the gut health.?
Love all these suggestions, running with diabetes, socks, shoes, book club, Barkley marathon (which I have seen). And Terrell, you do a great job week to week as well. Any and all are welcome topics to me! Thanks everyone!!
The ideas that have been said are great. I can’t think of anything. I’m grateful there’s a place to get information on running, marathons and some coaching. The books and music are great! As well. If there’s anything I can think of I shall mention it. Fort Worth is having their CowTown in May. Hesitate to sign up but I did. This will be my 5th 1/2 marathon. (Of course with all precautions)
Thank you for taking the time. Enjoy the kiddos~ Have a great week! Happy Running 😊
Not sure how many members are in the “over 50” category but would love to see some information and suggestions for us older runners. At 62 years of age I find those aches and pains are pretty evident and way more often then I would like to admit.
I'd like to hear some more of that info as well so I can take preventative measures, have an idea of what to expect in the future now.I'm a planner and would like to keep running as long as possible.
Me as well! I started running at 47 and ran my first half and full marathons before 50. Turning 52 this year, and I want to be smart so I’m running for years to come!
Terrell, you really give us what we need. You keep us going mentally and spiritually. You give us destinations and objectives and you give us something to listen to while running. You give us a connection with others, some more bold and broad than others but still like a family, our tribe. Just keep being that voice in my ear to keep going, one stride after another.
I like one about people's personal experience with minimalist shoes. For those who run or have run in them: Why did you start? What's your favorite brand/model and why? Do you run in them every run, only non-pavement runs, always/never on race day ...? Any advice for finding a good fit? Did they make any injuries better/worse? Do you do other activities in minimalist shoes? What don't they tell you that runners should know going in?
Terrell, you do a great job recommending races, but maybe we could have a periodic (once a month) member suggested races. Races that members have actually participated in and that they recommend and why they do so.
Love this, Maria! One reason I haven't re-started our book club is that Substack (the email service provider we use) has been planning on releasing new features that would allow us to create a separate book club newsletter (if that makes sense), so it wouldn't go out to everyone. I like that idea, b/c it would make it possible to make the book club its own thing. That feature was supposed to come online in February, but I haven't seen it yet -- I'll keep you posted!
Book Club Man!! I'd love to see that come back. I especially loved Running with Sherman. I would have never picked that up on my own, now it is one of the best, fun books I have ever read. The discussions around book club were great too.
Happy Friday everyone... a topic that's near and dear to my heart is... how important are a good pair of socks and what shoe brands are your favorite or do you switch/try different brands year to year... I love my new Bombas socks and have had a love/hate relationship with Asics as they make changes in the Gel Nimbus shoe... My favorite hands down right now is the Nike Zoom Alphafly Next. It didn't break the bank but the most expensive pair by far I've ever purchased.
Looking at 5 & 10K that are just starting to open up near me... Nothing is better than the adrenaline rush you get waiting fore the start...
If they wouldn't keep changing the shoe designs I could stick with one all the time.. I switched from Asics after 18 because the toe box got too tight... probably they were saving a nickel a shoe...my right foot is a hair longer than my left, and I refused to go up a full size... Now that the shoe stores are open, I can go in and try the shoes on...
I've run in Brooks Ghost 10 & 11... I'm always looking for the shoe that make me feel like I'm running on a cloud... I switch off between two pairs of Asics Numbus Lites and my Nike Alphafly... It's a good combination... at least for me...
Loving all the wonderful suggestions!! Part of what I miss most about in person races are the funny race day stories many people share. Might be uplifting for our group to share their fun stories with us?
Got my second vaccine yesterday...2 weeks until cautiously venturing back into the world. Happy Friday everyone! 😊
Awesome! My arm hurt a bit during the night on my second dose and I felt a bit listless next day. Day 3...just like normal, ran 5 miles feeling great. Hope similar results for you and everyone else getting dose #2!!
Got mu 2nd shot a couple of weeks ago and it was like a huge weight had been lifted... can't wait till late summer when most people have been vaccinated...
They sure are incredible Leslie! Have you seen the videos of Laz Lake's "Big's Backyard" races? No finish line...everyone runs loops continuously until only one person left at the start line. The 24/7 race goes on for days...can check them out on YouTube.
Some look like the walking dead, but others have gotten Laz's permission to run the event in other countries. Go figure, huh? The other country races are also on YouTube. Enjoy!!
Great idea, Daryl. I've been including races like these in some newsletters, but I could definitely do a better job of highlighting them/making people more aware of them. Glad you suggested.
I have noticed that that there are some small races that somehow never show up on the well known race calendars. Maybe they just don't want to have that many entrees. But some of the most enjoyable ones I have been to are smaller less-known events. Local example, in Brenham, TX, is the Blue Bell Half Marathon in a few weeks. CAUTION though, they still have not made an absolute commitment not to cancel over the virus. I wait until a race is 100% committed that they won't pull the "virtual" scam before registering.
This may be too specialized a topic for a group discussion here, but I'm a very newly diagnosed T1 diabetic [recovering from pancreatitis] and I'd love to know some tips from other diabetic runners.
Perhaps "dressing tips for less stress" when running. The warm weather is approaching and dressing "down" and keeping cool will become the challenge for many. And then in the Fall, perhaps chatting about "dressing for success" in colder weather.
i can't really think of anything interesting for a topic but just wanted to contribute to conversation. i'm just glad the weather is changing. i don't mind running in the cold but with the snow and ice this winter, driving to get to my running partner was super stressful and i had to cancel a lot of our runs because my car just slides if it sees ice:) so from now until the heat of the summer i'm looking forward to some great runs where i can lose the running gloves for the first time in months!
I was just diagnosed with a chronic stress reaction in my right tibia and told no running/impact exercise for four weeks. This is something that I have been dealing with for a couple of years but it really flared up in January after I ran in a pair of shoes I only wear when its snowy/icy out. We ran a really hilly route a couple of weeks ago and that is what put me over the edge. Normally I can manage this issue with routine massage, Graston tool work with my PT, rolling/stretching of my calf muscles. I am really tired of dealing with this and am wondering if anyone has had the same issue and was able to finally resolve it. What worked for you? Not looking for medical advice, just some anecdotal information. Thanks!
This is a great topic! I'm hoping my friend Jeanne (who's a running coach here in Atlanta) is online and can chime in -- if not, I'll reach out to her later to dig deeper on this. Thanks for this, Stacy!
Hi Paula! I had inflammation of the sesamoid bones in my foot. My podiatrist had me use Voltarin 3X/day for 6 weeks. That took care of it for me but I think I had a mild case.
Welcome, Paula! So glad to have you here. I can't wait either! How are you feeling now with the sesamoiditis? I am going to check with my friend Jeanne, who's a running coach here in Atlanta where I live, and see what she has to say.
I love the reading recommendations. I read Sherman and Fast Girls thanks to you. I also appreciate the race suggestions that I might not otherwise have known about. Like Natural Bridges Cavern half, so much fun that I would have missed out on if not for your suggestion.
That makes me so happy to hear that!
I have also seen some people take aspirin tablet , some take double bull Tin on a race day , are all this good ?
Kansa Bowl massage is usually given to the feet only to improve blood circulation, is it good for runners on a daily basis which helps enhancing the gut health.?
Love all these suggestions, running with diabetes, socks, shoes, book club, Barkley marathon (which I have seen). And Terrell, you do a great job week to week as well. Any and all are welcome topics to me! Thanks everyone!!
Thank you so much, Anne!

Thanks so much, Belinda!
I signed up for the Cowtown Half also!
I like the ideas people have contributed! I can’t think of anything interesting to add, so I’ll just say Happy Friday & hope everyone is well. 😊
That’s good enough for me, Corrina! 👍
Not sure how many members are in the “over 50” category but would love to see some information and suggestions for us older runners. At 62 years of age I find those aches and pains are pretty evident and way more often then I would like to admit.
Hitting the big "60" this year. Definitely interested!
I'd like to hear some more of that info as well so I can take preventative measures, have an idea of what to expect in the future now.I'm a planner and would like to keep running as long as possible.
Me too. The joints are creaking over here, I'd like to see more info from time to time about solutions, and such!!
Me as well! I started running at 47 and ran my first half and full marathons before 50. Turning 52 this year, and I want to be smart so I’m running for years to come!
Me three!
Rich, thank you SO much!!! You are incredibly kind to say this! Right back at you -- it's you all who keep me going.
I like one about people's personal experience with minimalist shoes. For those who run or have run in them: Why did you start? What's your favorite brand/model and why? Thanks for asking, Terrell!
This topic intrigues me as well 😊

Also, book club.

I liked that one too!
I just downloaded Running with Sherman from my library. Looking forward to reading it!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Looking at 5 & 10K that are just starting to open up near me... Nothing is better than the adrenaline rush you get waiting fore the start...
I received a pair of Brooks Llaunch 7 for Christmas (I usually use Asics) the Brooks are doing well but my me ! I was skeptical about them.
If they wouldn't keep changing the shoe designs I could stick with one all the time.. I switched from Asics after 18 because the toe box got too tight... probably they were saving a nickel a shoe...my right foot is a hair longer than my left, and I refused to go up a full size... Got my second vaccine yesterday...2 weeks until cautiously venturing back into the world. Happy Friday everyone! 😊
Getting my second dose 4/1!
Awesome! My arm hurt a bit during the night on my second dose and I felt a bit listless next day. Day 3...just like normal, ran 5 miles feeling great. Hope similar results for you and everyone else getting dose #2!!
I like the race day adventures! I can’t believe some of the things that have happened to me. 😁
Totally agree with both of you on the vaccine. I got my 2nd last week and can't wait to ease back in to the world - especially runs with my squad. :)
Got mu 2nd shot a couple of weeks ago and it was like a huge weight had been lifted... can't wait till late summer when most people have been vaccinated...
How about the Barkley Marathon?? those folks are incredible...

I thought you were going to say they run loops until one dies &then the race ends.I'm going to have check this out though! It sounds great.
Some look like the walking dead, but others have gotten Laz's permission to run the event in other countries. Go figure, huh? The other country races are also on YouTube. Enjoy!!
They are! Have you ever seen the documentary on the Barkley Marathons? It's so good. Here's a link to its website: https://barkleymovie.com/
Thanks for the link... never heard of them before...
How about suggesting live races that are smaller ones we might otherwise not hear about? Unique ones that might make for a nice "destination" race?
I like this idea!
Great idea, Daryl. I've been including races like these in some newsletters, but I could definitely do a better job of highlighting them/making people more aware of them. Glad you suggested.

Maybe a topic could be, "What small, live races do members recommend in their areas."
Yeah, that would be great!
This may be too specialized a topic for a group discussion here, but I'm a very newly diagnosed T1 diabetic [recovering from pancreatitis] and I'd love to know some tips from other diabetic runners.
Actually this is an excellent topic!

In Florida it can be brutal running in the summer... I still cover up.. the sun is not my friend...
These are great ideas!
