For podcasts, I like to listen to church sermons. I'll also listen to audiobooks via Audible. Having the ability to sync these two things (and my music playlists) to the Apple Watch is a real convenience.

While church sermons may seem kinda dry, the purpose for me during long grueling training runs is to get my mind off of my body telling me it would be more comfortable back in that warm bed. It also gives time to reflect on the body God gave me, which I should be grateful for and not be upset with. There are always times during a long run or a race where I've asked and received help from the Holy Spirit to push me forward. :-)

I love that, Bill, as I face the same dilemma quite often. Are you able to download them to your watch, and listen via AirPods?

Yes, it’s quite handy. The Podcast library will hold a few of each subscription, and I can add more via cellular data (if needed and am out on the trail), or when on WiFi.

Since you like comedy and true crime, check out Small Town Murder, and Crime in Sports! (the latter has hardly anything to do with sports, more making fun of people who had it all and made bad decisions to fall from fame!) Both of these are hilarious comedy podcasts by the same two guys: comedians James Pietragallo and Jimmie Whisman. Hilarious.

I must give kudos to you for being able to run and listen to a podcast, I end up tuning out at some point... However, I have a few favorites - The Thick Thighs Saves Lives - female-oriented but generally good advice and the ladies that host it are funny. Feel Better Live More by Dr. Chatterjee. And Rich Roll, his are super long but always great conversations.

So I am a huge fan of Small Town Murder and Crime in Sports. Jimmie and James host both shows and it helps to laugh on an 8 mile run in Ohio in February. Also, Timesuck is great with Dan Cummins...strange topics for us meatsacks to digest. Hail Nimrod! Also, History of Rome is great...200 plus episodes 20 to 30 minutes in length. Philosophize This is a good one too. So many podcasts and so little time.

I don't listen to anything when I am an obsessive when it comes to podcasts.

These are GREAT running podcasts:

- For the Long Run

- Rabbit & the Hare

- Science of Ultrarunning

Non running podcasts that I LOVE:

- Anthropocene Reviewed (incredible writing)

- Radiolab (more science than this American Life)

- This American Life (more investigative journalism, storytelling)

- Every Little Thing (pick one obscure topic/question like Flamingos and dive super deep)

- Work Life with Adam Grant (feels like a TED talk every time)

- The Pitch (very similar to Shark Tank but much more raw)

- 99% Invisible (obscure/unseen truths, people, designs that helped shape our world and their history)

I’m a huge fan of running to podcasts! Reply All (nonfiction about the internet) and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me (NPR comedy news quiz) are my favorites, but they’re funny so there’s the risk of laughing while you’re running and ruining your breathing pattern. The Moth (true stories) is also a good pick for long runs because they have hour-long episodes of very compelling stories. Gimlet Media has produced a few binge-worthy shows like Sandra, Crimetown, and Homecoming that are scripted and all-around fantastic.

Expand full comment

I'm a huge fan of Gimlet's podcasts too -- "Startup" was one of the first I listened to, and couldn't get enough. Even when they didn't focus on Gimlet and focused on other companies, it was still fascinating. I hear you on laughing while running too 😊. I'll definitely have to check out "The Moth."

I tend to be a little clumsy and I am afraid if I listen to podcasts on the run I might not be as observant of the terrain on which I am running. Music works for me on the run. I sometimes listen to podcasts when I am driving and I really like Jillian Michaels' and Coach Jenny Hadfield's podcasts.

I LOVE listening to books when I run! Except during an actual race, then its music to keep my pace up. But when training all I listen to is books, I find it helps pass the time, and makes it easier to run because it gives my mind something to do besides think about how tired I am or how cold it is, etc. And if its a really good book I can't wait to get up and run just so I can listen to it! Some of my recent favorites are; The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce, Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce, Early Riser by Jasper Fforde, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman, I also like almost anything by Haruki Murakami, David Mitchell, and Claire North. Anybody else like these books? If you do, please share other books you've enjoyed with me, I'm always looking for a good one!

Clive Cussler books are one of the best to listen to while running. The prolongs are a bit tedious, but are necessary to set up the story and then it is full speed from then on! Log into Overdrive from your local library and they are all free.

Another I've loved is David McCullough's reading of his book "The Wright Brothers" -- I just love his voice.

Expand full comment

I can only listen to non fiction, mostly memoir or self help. for some reason I can't follow a fiction story but never in a race like Melanie. for a race I make a playlist with all my favorite songs for the length of time that I expect to finish so if my playlist ends before the race is done then I went slower :)

I’ve really enjoyed seeing what everyone listens to! I’ll definitely have to add some new podcasts to my rotation! Thanks for sharing!

While running, I only listen to music, or nothing at all when I’m somewhere scenic. I enjoy podcasts when I’m driving and doing house chores. My most frequent go-to’s are Dan Carlin’s Hard Core History (history), the Bible Project (theology), and The World and Everything In It (current events/news). I sometimes listen to Mike Rowe’s “The Way I Heard It” and just started listening to Disney’s For Scores, which interviews the composers of their various soundtracks and gives a behind the scenes perspective on how film scores are made.

As for my music, I enjoy upbeat songs with a strong rhythm. While running, I like to imagine myself choreographing a dance battle or putting myself into the story of the music. It’s a little silly (especially since I have very little dance experience and no experience with choreography!) but it’s the mental trick I use to make my boring treadmill runs and long runs more enjoyable. Another trick. I only listen to my running music when I’m running, and if I start skipping a song I’ll take it out of the playlist and exchange it for another.

I’m always on the search for new songs to add to my collection. I’m going to try to share a link to my Spotify running playlist, for anyone’s who’s interested, and likewise I’d be interested to learn what music others run to.

Have a great weekend everyone and happy trails! (Real and metaphorical)
