My 14 year old just asked if we could train for a ten. K. Yay for starting young. I told him we should hunt up a good training plan so, yes!

And, great post. Read the first article, planning to read the other two tomorrow

Just getting back into running and I’m following your half-marathon training guide. My problem is, I live 30 miles east of Los Angeles & the weather is HOT! During the week I can only run late to mid afternoons. I’m feel so overwhelmed by the heat! Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Right out of college and living in NYC, the roommate of a young lady in my bank management training program would connect with me most nights to go for a casual run over-and-back on the Brooklyn Bridge. Roughly 35+ years ago before the bridge became such a hot tourist attraction. On most nights we felt like we were the only ones on that iconic structure. The runs were so peaceful and invigorating. The Brooklyn Bridge is still there but she long ago moved on. Still some of my favorite running memories.

Great article, thanks for sharing. I need to get back into the practice of tuning into my thoughts while I'm running. And like you said, discerning which ones to keep and which ones to let go.

YES to the 10k training plan!

Being from Minnesota I miss the coolness in the mornings. Since the kids are gone, I told her we should move to the NE... buy a small 1bedroom/ 1bath and enjoy ourselves for a change.. Over the years, we've rescued 93 Yorkie's and now we're down to two... one won't see next year... Our 100 year old home that I totally redid is paid for and we'd make a nice profit on it... Maybe I'll talk her into it...

This year in Florida it's been hotter than normal but you get used to it. I wish I was an early morning runner but my body seems to tell me when and what it wants to do. It'll be many months before it's cool again but my running shoes seem to call me most days. Believe it or not, your body gets used to the heat. My wife shakes her head but after so many years she just gives me a kiss and tells me to have fun. It's really her fault I'm still doing this. After running like a nut for a million years, I hung up my shoes and biked a little but hit the gym instead. Out of the blue one day she asked me to run with her."You used to run, how about running with me?" I gave her my "what the hell is going on look" but she said it's a good way to lose a few pounds. So, we walked, jogged, and attempted to run. She would always say, "you can go ahead...I'm holding you back. I would reply, "we're doing this together." After six weeks the novelty had worn off. She complained about her knees, back and how hot it was...but mostly how boring it was. And, it can be at times. I have asthma and run with music in my ears because I don't like to hear myself breathe. And after so many years, I can run in the heat. Run maybe pushing the word when it's 85+ and forget major distances, but I do 4 to 5 miles, strip off my clothes when I get home and slip into my pool. Being down here for 30+ years, I find running in the cold a lot more difficult....hard to believe after coming from Minnesota. Now when I hear of a 5 or 10K I'm usually there. I'm WAY TOO competitive. I'm not out to just run it, I'm out to win it! Well at 72, in my age group anyway. So, when I lace up my shoes and grab my hat and ear buds and my wife looks at the temperature on her watch and gives me the look ... I just tell her it's her fault and head out the door to clear my head and do something I love. Have a great 4th...

I love a good short run. It’s medicinal. Really wonderful post! I think a training plan would be really great, I’m in! Excited to get into these articles

"I’m not running for time or pace right now, I’m just running to run, and that’s enough."

AMEN! Yes, run and clear your mind. It's my best way to think. Have a great week and if you do the 10K plan let me know. My son wants to run one as well. Thanks Terrell and for the substack recommendations. I'm going to check them out.

Loved the articles, though I'll have to take them in increments. A lot of food for thoughts, as I have a degree in Fine Art and Finance and have been challenged many times on the "value" of them.

Good to find out that I am a "perfectionist" even though I threw that out of my vocabulary a long time ago! And wonderful that I do not get a fresh start. . . Great find in a newsletter!

Short runs are great. Like I said, I'll train for a Half if I have to, but it is not enjoyable--not like the old days when I was in my 60s. If I look back, and there is no back, the training was showing off and not fun! Easier to get hurt or exhausted. I love my shorter, ambling runs that I have been taking this summer. They fit the bill and clear my head. If you feel like making a training plan for a 10K that would be fine. Would give my running some direction. If not, enjoy your runs and thinking. Sometimes it is good to not have a goal. :)
