One of the reasons I love this newsletter!!! Wow! Keira's story is so inspirational, but so is our member Jim Gilroy. Because, let's be honest, at age 56, I am never going to come close to what Keira is doing, but I can certainly shoot for being as motivated as Jim is when I'm his age.

Getting a real winter for the first time in several years, running in the DC area has been a trial these past few week. I'm definitely not getting out 4 times a week due to the ice (I'm 71 and don't want to risk slipping and falling). Streets tend to be safer than many of the sidewalks - but then, there are those cars. However, when I do get out I always try to get at least 4 miles in, so I don't feel I'm falling behind. Just hoping these ice storms (the rain is turning to sleet as I type) don't persist through February. I hope all goes well with everyone out there.

I hope so too, Jim! We got a bit of that here in Atlanta last weekend; right now it's just cold temperatures, not much precipitation. That can (and often does) change, though... Stay warm and stay safe up there!

I love the way you write about running! New subscriber here, and recently returned to running after a hiatus... was a distance runner as a kid. I'm training for a 5k in a few weeks and excited to be a part of the running community here :)

Thanks so much, Catherine! Welcome to our group! Were you a cross-country runner as a kid? And how is your training for your 5K going?

I was, I started running in middle school. Stopped in college. Training is okay, I went too hard this week doing drills I remembered from high school and running stairs... I need to take a few days so I can walk again! Sigh.

Isn't it? Hearing Keira's story this week was a shot in the arm. It's so cool/amazing what she's done, the reaching for something more. It's just awesome.

Off and running 30-40 minutes this morning. It's raining, flood watches are up in our neck of the woods. . .but, it is 52 degrees! Using the 16 week Half Marathon Training from ChiLiving. It parallels very closely what you have set up for 18 weeks only in time and focus instead of miles. 5 Miles on Saturday--it should be sunny. Similar for Sunday which is a 30 minute Fun Run.

The Yoga Stretches after running and on off days really help with this older body. I'm feeling a lot younger! :)

Looked at the prices on the 2019 Monterey Half. If I can get in in April, it will be the race of a lifetime! For me, it is an expensive race. . .:)

I'll look today too! I know it'll be pricey, but if we can all get together it will be worth it 😃

Well, 2019 showed $113 for the Half for outsiders (not locals) for the first 1000. It went up from there. I was hoping to do the Ocean View which was a 5K challenge the day after the Half Marathon--total $137. Of course, this was 2019, not 2022. I can do it . I also know costs in Monterey. At least this gives me time to hunt around for reasonable accommodations or people I know who would put up with a crazy old runner! Definitely would be worth it if everyone can go! A race of a lifetime. . . :)

Wonderful story! I have a question. Last year I pulled my left hamstring and was on the bench for about 6 months. (randomly once or twice a week about 2.5 miles but nothing consistent) I'm committing myself to doing this with you all but now my other hamstring is acting up. Ahhh, 50...

On the 4 mile Tuesday, the right hamstring became really sore and it's still achy, today. Should I take a couple of days off or get my butt back out there? Sometimes it feels better after a run but how do you know when you need more rest days? Thank you all in advance and WAY to GO! :D

First, definitely don't risk injury -- take a rest day or two and see how it feels. Then, if it feels okay, try again. Is this something you experience often, or a new pain?

About a month or more. An aside, I took a holiday job in retail and dislocated my c3 and a rib due to repetitive movement to one side while standing in place. Other side muscles overcompensated. That's what the chiropractor said.

The good news is, this also made me realize how inactive I've been since covid started. I mean, I have been complacent! I'm pretty active in my grown up job but since everyone went virtual, found myself sofa surfing way more than usual. :D

I'm Good, did some light walking to loosen it up.

The better news is: I signed up 2 weeks ago for the first (live) 5k and thought it was this weekend but it's NEXT Saturday :D

I like the idea of running four days/ week. I did not run this morning and i do not feel guilty. I appreciate the extra sleep time. Thanks as always.
