Can the wrong shoe cause plantar fasciitis?

Do NOT trust a running store to put you into the correct shoe. If you are a distance runner and you want to be certain you are wearing what you should, make an appointment with a podiatrist, preferably one that works with runners. For years, the running store told me I was a pronator with flat feet, I needed a support shoe. So, that's what I wore. Ultimately, I severely strained the peroneal brevis tendon in my right foot and couldn't run for almost 7 months. I saw a podiatrist that worked with runners. X-ray, MRI, and a thorough exam later, he talked me through what my foot was doing. I was actually a supinator and the support shoe was making things worse. He fitted me with custom orthotics, put me in neutral/cushion shoes and eventually the problem resolved. Spend the money and avoid the problems.
