💬 Friday Thread: Where in the world would you love to go run?
Let's do a little daydreaming
Even though I don’t write (often) about it here, I’m not oblivious to what’s going on in the world around me. Just like you, I watch and hear the news, and see all the numbers flashing in the stock market too. (And breathe a heavy sigh…)
Which means, maybe today might be the perfect time to do a little daydreaming, right? This morning, I just happened to pick up an old book off my shelf, Becky Wade’s Run The World: My 3,500-Mile Journey Through Running Cultures Around the Globe.
In the book, she shares the story of a fellowship she took after college, during which she traveled to 22 countries and lived with members of the running community in each, talking and training and cooking and learning with them, every day for a year.
Whenever I walk past it, I almost always pick it up and thumb through it, both for the stories Wade shares and because it gives me a moment to daydream — what would it be like to run in Africa? What would it be like to run through the jungles of Costa Rica? I’ve run in a number of places and cities across the U.S., but have only barely scratched the surface of running internationally, just here and there.
So I thought I’d throw a question out to you: let’s daydream together. Where in the world would you love to run, whether it’s for a race or just on your own? What would you love to experience?
I'll start! A couple of years ago, the NYT did this fantastic piece on running in the Dolomites, a mountain range in the Italian Alps that just looks incredible: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/23/travel/dolomites-hiking-running-travel.html
It's part of a week-long running tour you can take, and trips like these have been sprouting up all over Europe (and really the world) over the past few years. One day... 😄
First thought, New Zealand, not even sure why. I've run on vacations which means early morning runs. Running with the sunrise or sunset some how is a bit magical. New Zealand and all it's beauty at sunrise, yet there's Ireland and even Utah. Maybe I'll day dream on that long run tomorrow.
