Morning, friends! ☀️ It’s August, which I know in some parts of the country/world you start to feel a little like fall, but here in Georgia… it’s still pretty sweltering!
This time of year always strikes me as one of those “in between” times, when summer is almost over and the school year hasn’t yet begun (though it actually has for some kids here where I live). It’s a time to take stock, and think about what we have ahead of us for the rest of the year.
So, since we’ve had so many people sign up as subscribers since the last time I asked this question, I thought I’d throw out a question I love to ask because it shows where we’re all scattered around the planet — I love it because it gives us the chance to get to know each other better, and perhaps meet up to run together in person, whether it’s for a race or to set up a weekend running group.
Over the years, I’ve heard from readers in just about every state, plus Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jerusalem, Tajikistan, India, Italy, France, Poland, Lithuania… the list goes on and on and on.
Without further ado, where are you from/where do you live out there in the world? Where do you love to run? 😀 — Terrell
Adirondack Mountains is where we call home. I am blessed to be able to run right from home. It’s a secondary road, but is a little busy during the summer months. GPS has routed traffic from Vermont to the Adirondacks.
Late to the party. I live and run in Indialantic Florida. I’m currently on a cruise and running treadmills in the North Atlantic. My Garmin takes the ship speed and adds it to my run speed and I think I should start running professionally!😂
I live and run in Tucson, Arizona. It gets HOT but you learn to adapt and make adjustments when you can. I love to run anywhere outdoors, but when its brutally hot you just have to run indoors. I love that wherever I DO run outdoors I can see mountains all around me.
I'm in NE Spain about an hour from Barcelona and 45 minutes from the French border! We don't have a car yet so most of my running is from my house to out to the nearby farmlands or up into the foothills of the Pyranees mountains.
I live in Austin, Texas, and had a great time last year running the Austin Half 😊. But, it's too hot there now, so I'm in Minnesota and run around parts of lake Bemidji 🏃♀️. I also take my Mom to Gold Canyon, AZ for the winter, and the superstition mountains are beautiful when I run the trails. 2025, I plan to run the The Lost Dutchman Half in Apache junction. I feel very blessed that I can run in such beautiful places!😁
I am in Green Bay, Wisconsin-- did a hot and humid run near Lambeau Field earlier today! Lots of tourists starting to come to town for football season so its fun to run around there and do some run-by people watching.
I'm in rural area in Indiana, just east of Muncie (home of Ball State University.) I run on one of the "rails to trails" paved trails most of the time. I also go to a state park nearby to get miles on unpaved trails.
Minnesota the past 4 years with Southern CA the 51 before that. I may snowbird in about 10-12 years so running a half in all 50 (29 down, 21 to go) gives me an idea of where I may wish to land.🏃♀️✈️🥰
Nyack, NY, where the north-south running route is manageable (as is the Tappan Zee Bridge), but the east-west hills (at 7-12% grade) really make you rethink hill repeat workouts!
I live in a small community in Phoenix Arizona. My house is at the base of a mountain with several miles of desert trail to run on. It is still Hot, hot, hot here. The perfect winter running is worth it.
I live in Scottsdale and have been training for a marathon throughout the summer in this heat 🥵. And, I quickly learned to run really early in the mornings. I do enjoy running around the mountains ⛰️! The desert is beautiful and the weather is perfect during the winter 😊!
I used to live in Cave Creek at the edge of a desert area where a lot of cattle roam. My dog (and I) used to love to run out there among the saguaros 🥰
I grew up and went to college in NY, started work in GA (and my running efforts), worked in FL, went to work for 18 years in DE (completed 15 marathons) and retired here to FL
Hi there! I’m in Cheyenne Wyoming and I love running in the mountains just to the west of us. There’s a state park there called Curt Gowdy State Park which has 35 miles of trails. Great trail running for my doggy and me!
I'm in Eugene. OR. Just got both of my eyes back this week. 20/20 vision without glasses! What a difference not having cataracts. . . I can actually see in 3-D now! I have a 1 mile charity run on 8/10 for Lahaina Strong to get the old running going again. Probably go along Amazon Creek. Signed up for the Bend 10K yesterday--April 13, 2025. Beautiful run. Of course, I prefer Bend to Eugene. There is a full and a Half, too, but having not run in a while, I went for the 10K.
Garden is doing great, more basil than we can use, and you should see the tomatoes! Garlic is harvested and ready to bundle. We'll skip the Saturday Farmer's Market. . . as usual too much to eat this time of year, as usual!
Farm country, rural Louisiana in retirement. Slowing down these days. Favorite places through years? Parks and streets uptown New Orleans. And the best--the mountains of southern Tanzania, tea fields, coffee farms, the views. The miles flew by.
Hillsboro, Oregon - westside Portland metro. My summer's been derailed a bit by some Lyme Disease I picked up on a run in Iowa, but hoping to get back at it soon! I'm itching to do some trail running on Mt Hood!
This is lovely,Terrel! Costa Rican- Spanish here, living in Scotland and seriously missing a proper Mediterranean summer this year haha.
I started my running journey in Barcelona so my runner's heart belongs there. But I've really enjoyed running in Scotland this last year. It's incredibly fresh, the views are breathtaking wherever you go, and from the safety lense, it feels pretty safe up here. I discovered and joined Parkrun - loving this movement so much! Nice and easy, in many places around the world. I highly recommend it. 👌🏻
Hi Nilima,I’m actually heading down there on Sunday. Hoping to go backpacking in the Mt Jefferson wilderness. Fingers crossed for no smoke from the wildfire south of Eugene 🤞
Buffalo Grove, IL. Just north of Chicago. Enjoy running in the city during couple of half marathons in the past. Local trail parks near my house are my favorite places.
I run in the Orlando area - mostly Winter Park, FL, but prefer to run anywhere the temperature is cooler in the hot summer. I get up to Tallahassee a lot as I have family there and get to run on some real hills. But my favorite places to run usually involve shorelines and oceans.... including Maine. Happy Summer!
Yes, but the Disney marathon weekend can be hot, even in January, or it can be frigid cold. A few years ago, it was so cold that at the water stations, the cups froze, and the spilled water turned to ice, making for some dangerous conditions for runners. You just never know about the weather that time of year. At least in the summer it is consistent....consistently HOT! :)
I live just an hour north of orlando. i can't run but started waiking agasin after two bouts of double pneumonia. Under doctord order not to run for six months. My lungs have to heal. Even just walking I swat due to the hight humidity.
Hey there Steve! 👋 My heart goes out to you, my friend, wishing you the speediest of recoveries. I know it's tough; hopefully all goes smoothly from here.
I was raised in Atlanta, GA but have lived on the coast of ME for many years. I am in a town called Boothbay, about an hour north of Portland, and I run year 'round up here. My favorite runs take me right by the ocean. We boast a long foot bridge over the water which is fun to run across early in the morning. On another note, tomorrow is the Beach to Beacon 10 K, a little bit south of me, in Cape Elizabeth. THE Joan Benoit Samuelson hails from there and she started this race over 25 years ago to honor all that her hometown gave her. You literally run where she used to!!! Who can forget her winning the first women's marathon in the Olympics in 1984?! It really "cracks me up" (NOT) that they didn't think women could handle running that distance not too much before her victory in Los Angeles. I "did" a Beach to Beacon training run several years ago with Joanie. Let's just say I saw her as she ran back by us slower folks; she yelled "Go team!!" How good is that?!Unfortunately, I am not able to run this amazing event as I had surgery the day of the sign up. It sells out in minutes. Quite
honestly, I am sad about this, but plan to run my own 10 K tomorrow in Boothbay. No need to whine as I am so blessed that I GET to run!!
That's right! What an amazing race, and YES I have been reading a book on exactly this topic, by Maggie Mertens (whom I plan to interview soon) called 'Better, Faster, Farther.' You'd really like it, I think. And, where you live sounds SO beautiful!!
I vacation in Maine frequently and have taken an early morning run around Boothbay Harbor. I know the very bridge you mention and have also run over it, and around all the little shops in the early morning when no tourists are clogging up the streets. What a great location!
I'm in Los Angeles. I haven't been running in a long while so not sure where my favorite spots are anymore. During my 5k and marathon training days the beach was my go to and a cove when I felt like making the drive. I'm scheduled to start running again with my sister this weekend, we'll see where I end up.
Nice!! (And welcome, Kali!) Which marathon(s) did you run, back when you were in your training days? And are you gearing up for something like that again?
I ran a San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon and a few Diva Half Marathons. My sister wants to do her first half marathon and is shooting for something ouside the US so ill be training with her but we haven't decided on a specific race yet.
I just googled where you live and the photos look amazing... have you lived there all your life? (I've had the chance to visit Canada once, for work -- spent a week in Toronto in February!)
I am in western Massachusetts. It has been a hot humid summer but I love running along the bike trail here. Parts of it run parallel to the river, and it is refreshingly cooler.
Welcome, Lisa! I've only had the chance to visit Massachusetts twice, and both times we were in Boston -- I've always wanted to get out to see more parts of the state. Someday!
I live in the southwest part of Las Vegas, NV and I love it! One mile from my house is the literal edge of town. It’s desert and mountains and trails for miles. (Too bad I don’t like trail running.😜 I’m a pavement runner.) I love living in Las Vegas, not just because I grew up here and have family here, but because you can run outside all year long. It does mean getting up pretty early in the summer, but it’s worth it. ☺️
I’m in the hill country outside Austin, Texas, but my heart is on a mountain trail, most typically of the no-switchback New England variation, but really any craggy, rooty, forested, or alpine trail my mind wanders off to.

Usually I am in hot, sweaty Houston, Texas. But this summer, my mom and I are on a long, cool cruise from Canada through Northern Europe. Yay Steph! Sounds like you’re having all the fun. Maybe sometime try a half in Norway? I did this one last summer. So amazing. Those Norwegians are a separate kind of tough. https://blefjellsbeste.com/en/race_en/
My very first half marathon was a ‘destination race’ and I love them! Scheduling is an issue, but I would love to do one in Norway, Iceland, Scotland…. All these delightfully cold, open spaces are perfect for running!
Illinois...20 miles from the Wisconsin border. I love to run in a local park. Great paved trail. It is also fun to run wherever I vacation or when I visit family. Something exciting about seeing a run mapped out on my Garmin in Jamaica or the UK or wherever I may be spending some time.
My bride would give anything to visit Iceland. Only problem is she's afraid to fly and the piolit won 't let her sit on his lap and steer. I though love to fly.
It was cool (high in the mid-50s) and sunny but apparently we got lucky with the sun 🤷🏽♀️ Will find out more next week when we go back that way. If bride does not like to fly, taking a cruise is a fantastic way to get to Iceland. 😎
Very nice!!! Will you see some of the volcanoes/thermal features there? My son and I just took a trip to Yellowstone NP and it was like walking on another planet.
Yes, signs of volcanic activity are everywhere. Steam vents, hot mud pots, hot rivers, hot pools and cooled lava flows make up the landscape. That and the almost total absence of trees make Iceland an alien island.
I'll start! I'm based in Atlanta, Ga. (if that wasn't already obvious) but I love to run in places around the south, like my hometown of Augusta, along the beach in South Carolina (where I'm headed next week), and really anywhere there's a trail to run away from cars!
Seattle is absolutely gorgeous, and when you get out of the city into the mountains (Tiger, Cougar, Squaw) it's even more outrageous. When you get up there, plan at least 2 weeks to explore. If you want to go on running adventures, I'll hook you up with my former running coach who has routes ALL OVER the puget sound area; both in city and in mountain.
Adirondack Mountains is where we call home. I am blessed to be able to run right from home. It’s a secondary road, but is a little busy during the summer months. GPS has routed traffic from Vermont to the Adirondacks.
North Carolina but I love to run out west: Utah, Idaho, Colorado, California, etc.....

Nice. My brother still lives there.
Ticks are evil they are awful here too. Hope you feel better soon
I’m in upstate NY. I like the trails in the summer
I’m in Huntington Beach CA. Surf City USA. I run on the beach 3x a week. Beautiful, beautiful,
I live and run around in Korea. Mostly Waegwan, Korea near Daegu. At least for 18 more months, God willing.
I'm in NE Spain about an hour from Barcelona and 45 minutes from the French border! We don't have a car yet so most of my running is from my house to out to the nearby farmlands or up into the foothills of the Pyranees mountains.

Wow I ran 8 miles on lake Bemidji in June! So beautiful. And the Lost Dutchman sounds intriguing!
I am in Green Bay, Wisconsin-- did a hot and humid run near Lambeau Field earlier today! Lots of tourists starting to come to town for football season so its fun to run around there and do some run-by people watching.

In Brazil on vacation
I ran near Belo Horizonte while visiting family there earlier this year. So hilly!!!
Nice! Where in Brazil? (I've been to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo before; I'd love to venture out from those cities, though!)
I am in small town called Garopaba in Santa Catarina state. Gorgeous place with lots of beaches, one better and prettier than the other.
Hi there! I’m in Cheyenne Wyoming and I love running in the mountains just to the west of us. There’s a state park there called Curt Gowdy State Park which has 35 miles of trails. Great trail running for my doggy and me!
I've driven Cheyenne a few times and have always been intrigued by what's to the west!

Farm country, rural Louisiana in retirement. Slowing down these days. Favorite places through years? Parks and streets uptown New Orleans. And the best--the mountains of southern Tanzania, tea fields, coffee farms, the views. The miles flew by.
Sounds like you have had some wonderful adventures! ❤️
Wow!!! I love New Orleans, and the running you're describing in Tanzania sounds completely amazing. Did you live there for a time?
Yes, several years in each. Wonderful memories!
Hillsboro, Oregon - westside Portland metro. My summer's been derailed a bit by some Lyme Disease I picked up on a run in Iowa, but hoping to get back at it soon! I'm itching to do some trail running on Mt Hood!
Oh no, sorry about the Lyme Disease. I hope you have all that in the rear view mirror (attached to your runner backpack soon).
Thanks, Lisa. Me too!
Welcome, Adam! I hope you feel better soon!
Thanks!

Will do!❤️

Hey, Ken! Still in Eugene. Dry here now, but prettier than in the winter!
Hi Nilima,I’m actually heading down there on Sunday. Hoping to go backpacking in the Mt Jefferson wilderness. Fingers crossed for no smoke from the wildfire south of Eugene 🤞
So far, so good. It's just hot and really dry. Be careful!
Hey there Ken!! So good to hear from you 👋
Falls Church, VA by way of Greene, NY
Ha I actually know where Greene ny is 🤣
Hey there Jim! 👋 Hope your summer's been great, my man.

Orlando is a great area. My wife and I did a half marathon in Celebration 2 years ago
Yes, I actually did that race in its inaugural year. It has a great after-party.
Crofton, Maryland
Welcome, Reggie! 👋

There are some great races in the mountains around Salt Lake City -- ever run any of them?
Yes, the Mt Nebo half marathon which is a beautiful.
Adirondacks of New York State.
Just got back from Inlet beautiful this time of year
Welcome, Joshua!
Hello from Charlotte, N.C.
Charlotte is a fantastic running city.
I second that!
I'm in Los Angeles. I haven't been running in a long while so not sure where my favorite spots are anymore. During my 5k and marathon training days the beach was my go to and a cove when I felt like making the drive. I am in Vineland ON Canada. All small town surrounded by country roads that are great for running and numerous wineries.
I just googled where you live and the photos look amazing... have you lived there all your life? (I've had the chance to visit Canada once, for work -- spent a week in Toronto in February!)
We avoid Toronto if possible. Traffic is a mess. Always grid lock on the highways in the city. Trains a not much better
Lived about 20 minutes from here for most of my life. Location is good as we are half an hour from the US and Buffalo airport.
I am in western Massachusetts. It has been a hot humid summer but I love running along the bike trail here. Parts of it run parallel to the river, and it is refreshingly cooler.

Hi Corrina! 👋
I’m in the hill country outside Austin, Texas, but my heart is on a mountain trail, most typically of the no-switchback New England variation, but really any craggy, rooty, forested, or alpine trail my mind wanders off to.
Austin checking in 👋
Hey Kevin ✌🏼✌🏼
I love the Hill Country there -- I've had the chance to spend a little bit of time there (though it's been years since I've visited). I've also been reading the first of Caro's LBJ biographies, and there's a long section where he describes the region... just breathtaking. Are you originally from New England?
That sounds like an interesting read! I’ll have to check it out. Not from New England, just have done a good bit of hiking and trail running in the region and really love it! Grew up in Virginia, whose trails of course also hold a special place in my heart ❤️
Definitely! Here's the whole series: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/YLJ/the-years-of-lyndon-johnson/
Caro is working now on the 5th and final book -- but, he's 88 years old, and we're all hoping he can get it done! 🤞
Hello,
I'm currently calling Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin home. It's a suburb of Milwaukee and a great area for scenic running along lake Michigan. When we get winds off the lake it's like running next to a giant air conditioner. Temps along the lake can be 10-15 degrees cooler than locations further inland - really enjoy that during the summer.
Now that's pretty amazing -- I had no idea the lake could have an effect like that! When I run along the Chattahoochee River here, which isn't far from my house, it feels noticeably cooler too -- but not that much cooler! Wow.
Usually I am in hot, sweaty Houston, Texas. But this summer, my mom and I are on a long, cool cruise from Canada through Northern Europe. As I write, we are somewhere between Iceland (which is AMAZING) and Norway. Temperature for my run this morning around the Promenade deck (3 laps to a mile) was a delightful 48F 🥰 ; winds near gale force + rocking ship gave a small ‘level of difficulty’ boost 😉 Long run tomorrow should be slightly warmer and less ‘difficult,’ but there may be more passenger promenading, which creates different challenges 😏
This sounds so amazing, Steph... I'm insanely jealous right now!!!
Illinois...20 miles from the Wisconsin border. I love to run in a local park. Great paved trail. It is also fun to run wherever I vacation or when I visit family. Something exciting about seeing a run mapped out on my Garmin in Jamaica or the UK or wherever I may be spending some time.
I love that too!
Michigan. Hot and sticky here this summer. Looking forward to my trip to Iceland in two weeks. High temperature will be in the 50’s. Yeah!
My bride would give anything to visit Iceland. Only problem is she's afraid to fly and the piolit won 't let her sit on his lap and steer. I though love to fly.
Just left northern Iceland. It is an amazing place to visit. Will be back there in about a week to visit southern ports. Can’t wait!!
How's the weather in the summer and are the people as friendly as I've heard?
And yes, everyone was friendly and spoke great English!
I’m in Texas. Been here for about two decades but not originally a Texan.
Interesting! Where are you from originally?
Born in NY actually - my parents are Brooklyn natives. I grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, though. We moved when I was in grade school.
I'll start! I'm based in Atlanta, Ga. (if that wasn't already obvious) but I love to run in places around the south, like my hometown of Augusta, along the beach in South Carolina (where I'm headed next week), and really anywhere there's a trail to run away from cars!
Seattle!
I've never been there, and it's like the one city in America I *really* want to visit. Someday!
Same! There's some great trails on Kennesaw -- and the view from the top is spectacular.
