It’s been almost a year since the last time I asked this question, which I love because I’m always curious to learn how we’re all scattered around the planet. (Over the years, I’ve heard from readers in just about every state, plus Colombia, Costa Rica, Jerusalem, Tajikistan, India, Italy, France, Poland, Lithuania… the list goes on.)
Some of you have already used these threads to meet up for races in person — which is awesome! — and I think this gives us the chance to get to know each other better, and hopefully meet up for runs/races together.
We’ve had lots of new people sign up since the last time I asked, so I thought it was a great time to ask again: where are you from/where do you live? Where do you love to run? 😀 — Terrell
We live in Northern Kentucky just south of Cincinnati. Some of our favorite running routes are on the Loveland Bike trails for long runs and to 50West for adult beverages afterwards. The Purple People bridge that links Kentucky to Cincinnati and a run to Smale park and Paul Brown stadium on the Ohio river. AJ Jolly and the Alexandria Community park to name a few.
Hi! I live in central MA, but have been in Boston a decent amount this year as my daughter has been at Dana Farber/Boston Children's for stays throughout the year. Enjoy running in both places - my hometown is rural and hilly, in Boston I stick to the riverway paths and streets near the hospital.
Hi! I live in South Weymouth MA (slightly south of Boston) and run in my neighborhood. It's has some nice shaded areas which are great to run through when the weather is warm.
I live in Anchorage Alaska. My husband loves to run in woods on the miles and miles of trials about 3 miles from our home called the bicentennial trails. My favorite place to run is on the coastal trails. An 11 mile trail that hugs the shore line of Cook Inlet from down town to Kincaid park I haven’t been running as much though as I’m recovering from a foot injury.
I am from southwest Indiana, the quaint river town of Newburgh. My favorite place to run is on the greenway along the Ohio river. I am currently starting to train for the Chugwater K-9 half marathon on 9/3. I will not have a dog in that race! Haha
My wife and I live in Vineland Ontario Canada. Approximately 45 minutes from Buffalo Ny. We are both runners and typically try to sign up for destination runs either in Ontario or in the US. We normally do more runs in the US. Syracuse, Rochester Columbus and Florida. Toronto has some good runs as does Niagara Falls ON.
I live in La Selva Beach, 15 miles south of Santa Cruz, CA. The absolutely best place to live to run. Average temps all year long are between 50 and 75 degrees! And there is the opportunity to do all your runs either along the ocean or in the Redwoods.
My wife and I live in sunny Florida just an hour north of Orlando in a 100 year old historic home. It's nice not to have to pay a state income tax, but the cost of living down here more than makes top for that. Unless you mind running in the rain and a few wind storms, you can run 365 days a year...
I think there are more road races put on in Florida than any other state...
We've been all over and it's been awesome. Though I will admit, I have not run! My wife and I are just having a great time together and running hasn't worked itself in yet :) It's beautiful here though and some of the trails we've been on and have seen would be great to run
I live in the suburbs surrounding Pittsburgh, PA, and I go to college in the city. There are so many cool places to run, and I am a big fan of running over bridges. Hot, humid, and hilly!!
For the past 5 years I have lived with my family just outside of Nashville, TN. We love it here but the weather can sure get hot and humid in the summer months for those outdoor runs. I've gotten used to setting my alarm early before the temperatures really start to rise!
I live in Fort Collins, CO where there is a great running scene! I primarily run in the Natural Areas and Open Spaces around Fort Collins (specifically Horsetooth Mountain and Lory State Park), but there's tons of National Forest access just short drives in many directions. I like to run first thing in the morning, and listen for birds as I run.
Hello there I'm from Santo Domingo pueblo NM I live on the reservation it's between Albuquerque and Santa Fe I love running on the trails and hills sometimes I run in Santa Fe right after I get off work
I live in Pleasant Grove Utah which lies at the base of the Wasatch mountain range, I can see Mount Timpanogus from my front door step. I love to run in new places, trails, small towns etc. I get to travel to the Phoenix area a few times a year, where I love to find a new trails to run unless the temp is too hot.
I love Utah County! I went to BYU & needed up staying in Provo for 11 years, then SLC for 2 before moving back to Las Vegas. I miss the mountains, the cooler summer nights, & the thunderstorms. I do not miss the winter though! 😊
For now, it is Redmond, WA. With the urban growth, my daughter and I are looking for a place north to buy. Rents are ridiculous. Seems, tho, that every place we look, there are trails, so that is not a problem. It's finding the right place!
Been running the Sammamish River Trail for the last 12 year, which branches off to the Puget Sound Trail, or--continue on to Bothell, which eventually goes to Seattle on the Burke Gilman. Doesn't really matter. It is all pretty much maintained by our fabulous Parks and Rec.Department. Put your shoes on and go. No traffic to contend with other than bicycles.
I was born and raised in Colororado Springs, CO. I lived in LA and the Rancho Mirage area for 14 years before returning home to Colorado. I currently live in the Castle Pines area(south of Denver) with my husband and fur baby! Favorite place to run…….home.
Philadelphia, PA. The Schuykill River trail is my go-to path. It starts in Center City, courses around the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and the Rocky Steps!) and then heads upriver for miles and miles. Past bridges. Statues. Playing fields. Then into the hilly, leafy Wissahickon Park.
That said, my favorite running place has to be Tuscany. Gorgeous hills and light. Once I was on a trail and suddenly came across a wild boar. He chased me for a spell (or it felt like it!). I've never run so fast in my life.
I was mountain biking with my wife in Tenn... we came around a bend and came face to face with a bear... We turned around and raced back down the trail... I turned around and saw the bear and two cubs running in the opposite direction...
Happy Fourth of July! Seattle Washington where the summers are awesome for running ( high temp in the 70’s usually) but the winters can be long and dark.
Right back at you, Ken! That I totally get... it's the opposite here in the south. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs... I have never visited Seattle, but always wanted to. Where should I go when I (eventually!) get there? And where should I go for a run?
If you ever get here, I'm sure there will be plenty of help. It's hilly, but you get used to it. Lots of runners and run groups to give you suggestions on their favorite trails. :)
Good morning! I'm in Long Beach, CA (just south of LA). I never get tired of running along the Pacific Ocean. Always changing, always things to look at. Yesterday saw a pod of dolphins and a bunch of surfers. Lots of amazing trails out here too. Really dry right now, but still beautiful. Have a wonderful weekend, all!
Hi Amy! 👋 I love the Pacific Ocean too! I've had the chance to run a couple of times in Los Angeles, along the trails along the beach there, and it was just lovely. Have a wonderful weekend too!
I'm in the beautiful Sonoran desert in rural Cave Creek Arizona. Like David Baker of Gilbert said, you gotta get out really early here in the summer or it's just too darn hot.
I just started training for my first half marathon in January 2023 (Rock and Roll). I've learned that if I don't get out by 6am, I'm going to be miserable.
My family and I did a drive across Arizona back in 2019 and LOVED it. We started in southern Arizona (we went to Bisbee for a night) and then traveled up through Tucson, saw the Sonoran Desert Museum near there, and then up to Phoenix and the Grand Canyon. So, so beautiful there.
Boston, Massachusetts. I've been so grateful to have such great places to run right in my backyard: the Charles River Esplanade, Fresh Pond, The Minuteman Path/Battle Road Trail, the Middlesex Fells, the Emerald Necklace. I'm moving to the Bay Area at the end of this month, and though there will be some amazing running there, I'm sad to leave my favorite trails around the Boston Area.
I would be too, Kate. What an amazing set of places to run. Have you ever been running in SF? It's hilly (obviously!) but there are some really lovely places to run there too. I totally get the bittersweet feeling; I have a very hard time with moving too. But, what a great place to move to! What's your favorite distance to run?
Have done just a bit of running in San Jose! I'll be living in South Berkeley/North Oakland, but I have a bunch of friends in SF, so definitely hoping to run there as well.
I've historically raced 5k-half marathon, but I'm interested in exploring the trail scene...
Good running here, as well as triathlons: we’re hosting the world’s biggest Olympic Distance and have a full IRONMAN race, too. It doesn’t always have to be Berlin when you come to Germany 😉
Well I swam once and went for bike ride three times 😅
I know that sounds crazy, but since I’m running a lot, the cardio is alright already. And with swimming I found out that once I hit the correct technique a few years ago, I could quite easily replicate the pace even after monthlong breaks – swimming is 90% technique.
The cycling on the other hand was tough to do without good training. I had to rely on the cardio from running and that got me to a 5:59:39 split for those 186 kilometers (115mi) which even I was surprised with.
What can you do when you’re a runner, right? 😄 I go about all that in detail in that linked post.
New York City. Love running here. The rivers, Central Park, the streets. Nothing but variety, flat or hills as you like, and running through neighborhoods is a real joy. You can cover multiple ones over a span of 4-6 miles.
Hey that’s awesome, here’s a weird proposal: would you be up for the Manhattan perimeter, 31 miles? A bunch of friends are getting together on July 31st to make that happen, here’s more info: teesche.com/manhattanloop 😉
Virginia’s Historic Triangle - Williamsburg, the colonial capital; 10 minutes to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement; and 15 minutes to Yorktown, the final battle of the American Revolution. All three sites host several runs throughout the year, ranging from the “Run the D. O. G.”5k (on the ‘Duke of Gloucester’ street through the colonial area) to the Colonial Half Marathon from Williamsburg to the Busch Gardens area. As a bonus, our local craft breweries host several runs, and there are two highly active running clubs.
Those are fantastic trails to run -- I got the chance to run the Marine Corps Marathon there once, and we ran alongside some of the trails. Also got to run out at Mount Vernon once (I did an internship in D.C. when I was in college) -- just beautiful.
Best downtown Boston route is a loop around the Charles River by the Hatch Shell, down the Esplanade, across the Mass Ave Bridge to Cambridge side and back by Museum of Science - about 5 miles
I don't blame you! I love Denver -- got to visit there in 2017 for a conference for work, after not going there for like 20+ years. It's amazing what they've done with the city/downtown.
Hi Julie - I lived in Syracuse for 6 years, but wasn't a runner yet. But have been back and ran a long run on the erie canal path. super pretty! So much beauty in NY State! I love the loop around Mirror Lake in Lake Placid too. And so much between Albany and NYC! Enjoy the green - I miss that (i'm in dry southern California now)
OMG Amy! Many of my runs are on the Erie Canal and I also have done a few loops around mirror lake in lake Placid too. One pregnant...one with baby in stroller! HA! What brought you to Southern Cali? Glad to get your message here.
Hi. I was born and raised in SoCal. Went to grad school in Syracuse. Moved back to CA after. My husbands family is from Albany so I got to see lots of New York. Lake Placid is one of our favorite places.
Hi Terrell! Here are my tips...when school was in session I would pick them up and head straight to the trails to run. My son who is 9 yo was all for it my daughter 7 yo I had to bribe. So after our run/walk we would stop for ice cream or a special snack. LOL! They also wanted to be apart of the races so I signed them up along with some of their friends and that helps too. I would love to get a running club going for kids in my area. I think it would be so great. One of my many ideas! Hope some of this helps? Friends and ice cream...give it a go? Let me know if it works. :)
I'm in the southwestern corner of Scotland, on the strip of mainland that faces the isle of Arran. And since as a runner I'm whatever comes before Absolute And Total Beginner, I'm using a half-mile strip of grassland in front of the beach as my training ground as I start getting used to running again, after around 20 years off. It's usually fiercely windy, so I get help on the way out, and I suffer on the way back. :)
(I do a lot of walking, but I'm finding I can't get my heartrate up high enough doing that, so I'm alternating with running to get some intensity back into my daily routine. My health got really bad about 6 years ago and I put on too much weight for my knees to deal with, so since then it's been steady progress towards being the active person I used to be. But no races for me for a while, I suspect!)
Hey there Mike! 👋 I actually love walking too -- I alternate throughout the year, periods when I'm into walking, and periods when I'm into running. Before I had kids, I had a group of friends that I'd go on long walks with here around Atlanta -- I'm talking like 10, 15 miles. We'd see parts of the city we'd never otherwise see. It's fantastic exercise. But, I'm glad to hear you're aiming to get back into running again! Are you anywhere close to St. Andrews?
Hooray! Glad you feel the same way. That sounds like exactly where I want to get my own health back to: alternating from big walks for stamina to medium runs for intensity. I look back very fondly on a big walk I did back on the east coast of England, where I covered a marathon's worth in one day. Nowadays ten miles is enough to get me wobbly-legged, but it's nice to see my strength returning at last. Such a great way to see the world and pay attention, at least until I get tired.
Also, a fun thing I discovered via a friend who is a professional British adventurer: connecting Strava to Heatflask: https://www.heatflask.com - and using it to "paint in" all the places nearby that I've never visited. Super cool/nerdy.
And no, not near St Andrews - that's the other side of Scotland! But I used to live near there when my dad was in the Royal Air Force. Gorgeous part of Scotland! You know the place yourself?
Yes! I got to visit St. Andrews once when I was in college, part of a 6-week program at Oxford University. We traveled up one weekend to St. Andrews, and I fell in love with the city. So gorgeous -- just an amazingly cinematic place, if that makes any sense. And of course, with the Open Championship coming up, I can't wait to watch it all on TV again.
Funny story -- when I was there, some of my friends invited me to go along with them to play the Old Course. I said "nahhh," because I wasn't much into golf then. What I'd give now to play it!!!
Good Morning everyone. I live in Gilbert Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. As I shared before, we’re in the hot season here so very early morning runs are the norm. Active running community here as well.
I’m originally from just across the Ohio line in Conneaut. As a teenager and college student I loved running along the Lake Erie shore. Now in Williamsburg Virginia (where we don’t have to slug through three feet of snow on our winter runs).
Good day everyone! I'm located in the Tampa Bay Florida Area. We havea great running community here and there is a race in the area every weekend of the year!
Yes, among many other famous Ags.
Hi, I'm from Japan, Kyoto.
Here is now very humid and hot, but It is very refreshing to run along the river.
It looks most of people are from US/EU.
If I'm not in the mood to run, I sometime read this substack and remind a joy of running.
Have a nice day, Everyone!
So great to hear from you, and welcome! Which river do you run alongside? I’m so glad you wrote in.
I sometime run along the river called "Kamo gawa", which means Duck River. haha
This river flows along downtown, so many people hung around freely,
especially in spring, scenery is quite nice with cheery blossom:)

Hi, I live in East Texas. I have lived here all my life. I love to run anywhere and I am currently training to run my first Ultra this November!
Hello, Omar! Great to hear from you! Where will your first ultra be?
Glen Rose, TX - Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run in November.
Hi! I live in central MA, but have been in Boston a decent amount this year as my daughter has been at Dana Farber/Boston Children's for stays throughout the year. Enjoy running in both places - my hometown is rural and hilly, in Boston I stick to the riverway paths and streets near the hospital.

Hi! I'm from Long Island and I usually run some trails near my house
Welcome, Mallory!
I am from Las Vegas, Nevada. I run around my neighborhood. It’s hot in the summer, but I get up early. I love that I can run all year long.
I am from southwest Indiana, the quaint river town of Newburgh. My favorite place to run is on the greenway along the Ohio river. I am currently starting to train for the Chugwater K-9 half marathon on 9/3. I will not have a dog in that race! Haha

Home is Moses Lake, WA…..a high desert oasis with a fantastic 5K lake-view loop in our neighborhood.
That sounds gorgeous, Kathrina!
Howdyhey, I’m currently in Rochester, NY. I run solo, sticking to the neighborhoods I mostly know and the Genesee Riverway some.
Welcome, Kate! 👋
In Boston MA! Just moved back here from SF! Both beautiful places to run
Knoxville, TN. We have an abundance of paved greenways, with some parts that are nicely shaded, that are fun to run.
I live in La Selva Beach, 15 miles south of Santa Cruz, CA. The absolutely best place to live to run. Average temps all year long are between 50 and 75 degrees! And there is the opportunity to do all your runs either along the ocean or in the Redwoods.

Where am I now? Just got back from a trip to Morocco. Unfortunately it didn't seem conducive to running so I took a bit of a break.
Back home now on the Monterey Peninsula where I can run along the water every day!

Northern Virginia, just outside of DC.
Currently living Spring Hill, Kansas, but I’m from Texas. First 20 years in El Paso, the remainder since last year in Arlington.
Favorite place to run… Texas State parks! I miss it :(
Hi Jennie! 👋
Philadelphia, PA. The Schuykill River trail is my go-to path. It starts in Center City, courses around the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and the Rocky Steps!) and then heads upriver for miles and miles. Past bridges. Statues. Playing fields. Then into the hilly, leafy Wissahickon Park.

trail running definitely keeps you on your toes!
Wow!!! I can imagine! (Also, the Schuykill River Trail sounds GREAT!)
Columbus, Ohiio. The city has great paved running trails and metro parks. A few single track mountain biking and running trails also.
Las Vegas, NV. It is hot here so a lot of treadmill running but I am not afraid to get a little sweaty!
I’m in Vegas too! Yes—treadmill for me when school starts again. Otherwise I’m up at 4/5 am to run in the summer. Naps daily. 😁
I am no stranger to my treadmill either!
Happy Fourth of July! Seattle Washington where the summers are awesome for running ( high temp in the 70’s usually) but the winters can be long and dark.
Originally from Minnesota... winters were also, dark, cold and LONG!!!
Lake Washington is a beauty of a run, particularly during those clear summer evenings with Rainier in the distance. Miss my second home!
It's particularly nice here on the Eastside this year. Been cool all summer. . .in the 70s. You can't beat it. Been here over 12 years. . .
Right back at you, Ken! That I totally get... it's the opposite here in the south. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs... I have never visited Seattle, but always wanted to. Where should I go when I (eventually!) get there? And where should I go for a run?

Hope you weren't[t near the fires...

I love Utah County! Lucky!!!
That is a great place to run, all the trees provide some great shade.
Welcome, Bonnie!

Welcome, Tim! So great to hear from you. An Ironman race?! Wow!!!! What was that experience like?
Incredible, thanks! So tough but so rewarding in the end.
In 2019 it fell on my birthday, so I naturally had to do it 😄 In case you’re interested, I enjoy writing about these things: https://www.teesche.com/blog/special_35th_birthday_ironman_hamburg_2019
What was your training for the Ironman like?

Thanks for the offer. That distance is too much for me at the moment. Doing halves mostly. Good luck. You'll have a great time.
Welcome, Ernest! I love running in NYC too. I've never lived there, but I ran the NYRR's NYC Half Marathon several years ago. Such a blast.

Those all sound fantastic, David! Have you ever run the Colonial Half?
It’s in February. Some have been on sunny 60 degree days; some in freezing rain. All on continuous rolling hills.
5 times.
Nice!
Checking in from right outside Washington DC. I’m a big fan of the network of trails we have along the Potomac River and branching out from there.
Those are fantastic trails to run -- I got the chance to run the Marine Corps Marathon there once, and we ran alongside some of the trails. Also got to run out at Mount Vernon once (I did an internship in D.C. when I was in college) -- just beautiful.
Indeed! There is a great 10 miler that starts at Mt. Vernon and ends in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. My favorite race!
That sounds really cool! 10 miles is the PERFECT distance in a lot of ways.
College Station Texas, Home of Texas A&M University, and Blinn College.
And the alma mater of Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, right?
Boston based for any runners out there! Travelling alot for work for always interested to hear of running routes along the eastern half of the U.S!
Best downtown Boston route is a loop around the Charles River by the Hatch Shell, down the Esplanade, across the Mass Ave Bridge to Cambridge side and back by Museum of Science - about 5 miles
Boston is such an amazing place to run!
Vancouver, BC here. Though currently visiting WA!
Love running Vancouver. Stanley Park is incredible. You're lucky.
I really am Neal. The North Shore is a treat as well :)
Haven't done the North Shore. Next time!
The baden Powell trail is a little over 40km and has all kinds of options off of it, you will love it
How cool! How is the running in Washington? And which part are you in?
Greetings! I live in Denver, CO - despite our mountainous state, I prefer to run on the roads.
Being in Denver I can imagine the hills...
I don't blame you! I love Denver -- got to visit there in 2017 for a conference for work, after not going there for like 20+ years. It's amazing what they've done with the city/downtown.
Yes, the growth is enormous the infrastructure, however, is lacking— but thankfully it’s getting addressed.
I’m sure if you came back soon you’d be surprised at the expansion.
Hey! I live in Upstate NY. I love running roads and trails...the best when my children join me! :) Great to meet you all.
Upstate NY is gorgeous! Lucky!
Hey Corrina! Yes it really is...I didn't appreciate it until I left for a few years. Glad I'm back.
That's awesome Amy! My husband and I had our honeymoon there! :) It really is a great place. Have a wonderful weekend.
Hi Julie! 👋 How do you corral your kids for your runs? I'm in need of tips! (We have a hard time getting our 8-year-old to join us)
Springfield, IL here. I like to run just about anywhere except on Satan's sidewalk (treadmills).
Now THAT's funny 🤣 🤣 🤣
Good Morning everyone. I live in Gilbert Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. As I shared before, we’re in the hot season here so very early morning runs are the norm. Active running community here as well.
What’s the temperature there like this time of year?
Highs of 103 - 112. Early morning is around 80.
Erie, PA. Sunny and humid. Home to Presque Isle State Park.
Did the race there a few years ago. Lovely place.
I’m originally from just across the Ohio line in Conneaut. As a teenager and college student I loved running along the Lake Erie shore. Now in Williamsburg Virginia (where we don’t have to slug through three feet of snow on our winter runs).
Cool.
Humid here too! (But it always is this time of year in Atlanta...)
Good luck if you’re racing Peachtree Road race. I was scheduled, but now I’m going Virtual !!!! I envy your ability to do this race.
Good day everyone! I'm located in the Tampa Bay Florida Area. We havea great running community here and there is a race in the area every weekend of the year!
I'm also a Florida boy... Leesburg...just an hour north of Orlando...
From what I've seen over the years, that's certainly true! How many are there in the summer? (And how hot does it get there in July/August?)
In the summer there are quite a few 5ks. Not so many Half and Full Marathons. On an average July weekend there are about 4 or 5 5Ks within 30 miles.
Every day is about the same in the summer. We'll be 91-95 degrees every day with a feels like of about 105-110 degrees...
