Hello from sunny, 58 degrees Huntington Beach CA. I’m about 50 miles from the fires. I’m thankful for today but with heavy heart as so many in LA are suffering. I’ve lived here since 1970 and been through fires, floods and earthquakes but nothing, nothing compares to this.
Kay, I've been watching the video and photos coming out of L.A. and I'm just heartbroken for you, and everyone there. It's just been unbelievable to watch; we visited there just a couple of years ago (and I've been a few other times) and my wife spent part of her growing up there too. It's just devastating -- my heart goes out to you.
Normally in Annapolis, MD, where it’s 31 degrees and about to snow more, but we’re currently on vacation in Belize, where it’s 79 and sunny. 😎 Much as I love snow, this is pretty nice for a brief time.
Greetings from Southern California (South Orange County), where the highs will be in the upper 60s/low 70s. My mind and my heart have been with my friends up in L.A. this past week. I used to live on the Westside, where the Palisades Fire broke out, and my heart aches. But that is just one of several devastating fires up there.
In addition to the homes, businesses, and history that have been lost, I also mourn for the trails and the wild animals that are in that wilderness. As a trail runner, the Santa Monica Mountains and Angeles National Forest are dear to my heart. There is so much beauty up there. It just shows that we need to appreciate and protect what we have. It can all be wiped out in a flash.
It's been tough to watch -- especially from afar. On our local news, we watched a mountain lion and two of her cubs scampering down the road, likely looking for safety. Animals are smart, resourceful, and resilient; I hope they were able to find refuge.
When I was ten years old, my family spent a year in Santa Monica. Last year I had the good fortune to visit that area again, biking around my old neighborhood on 15th Street. Last I saw from looking at the fire maps, it appears that area is under evacuation, or perhaps now in ruin.
The devastation from the wildfires is heartbreaking and traumatic. I don’t know how affected individuals and communities will recover, emotionally, physically and spiritually from such losses. It’s almost too much for the heart and mind to handle. Nature has reminded us, once again, how little control humans have over their environment.
Santa Monica is such a neat community. My wife taught on Montana and 23rd. I imagine that 15th street saw plenty of smoke, but to the best of my knowledge, that area was spared from the fires.
I can't imagine what it's like for the thousands of Angelenos who have lost everything -- so devastating. If there's a silver lining, it's seeing people from all over L.A. come together for a single cause: to help one another.
Louisville, Kentucky, still dealing with the ~11" of snow we've gotten since Sunday, and awaiting potentially a few more today. (Our annual average is 12", so we're looking good to blow past that this year.)
… gonna reply with a story an associate told me years ago. He was growing up in Wyoming in the 1950s and with rabbit ears, could pick up Denver TV. The weather guy came on the TV and said, “I owe you viewers an apology for my forecast from the other night. I received a note from a viewer that he woke up the morning after and had to shovel 11” of ‘partly cloudy’ from his driveway!”
Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, I’m now living in Eden, Utah. In the Ogden Valley, Surrounded by mountains, we’ve having a lackluster winter with not much snow.
Right now I’m snowshoeing which is lovely. I’m thinking of getting snowshoes made for trail running in the snow.
Skiing for me will have to wait until there’s better coverage of rocks and aspen tree suckers as Powder Mountain doesn’t make snow. The last few years, however, we had an abundance of snow which meant lots of skiing days.
Two years ago I ran the 15K which is part of the route and run at the same time as the Ogden marathon. Both races wind down Ogden Canyon which is closed to all vehicles and follows the Ogden River to downtown Ogden. It’s a fun way to experience the beauty of the canyon. I’m hoping to run either the 15K or half marathon, barring any injuries.
Are you thinking of running either of those races?
I live in northern Delaware and we still have snow on the ground from Monday’s storm. Doesn’t usually stick around this long. It’s been much colder than normal here.
That's so wild to imagine -- whenever it snows here, it's usually gone in 24 hours. To have it stay on the ground and just stay for days on end... I can't even imagine!
Plenty of Rain and 43 degrees. No Cats but Andy is up and about. My little hummingbird makes it every day. . .he get up at daybreak and waits for his warm food! The other day there were about 6 of them at the feeder.
Thank God no snow or ice. . . The primroses are blooming in January!
They did last year. I have pink and dark purple. The next door neighbor said it felt like spring to her. All of her flowers were blooming, too. . . but that was before the ice storm! Be glad it is normally warm where you live!
In Glasgow, Scotland. It’s -7 degrees here but it’s actually still bright and sunny at least. Nice for a very cold run!
Negative 7! Wow -- that's Celsius, right?
Yup!

Thanks Terrell. I’m blessed to be safe.

I'm SO JEALOUS RIGHT NOW!!!

That's something that hasn't been remarked on much, John, and I'm really glad you did. It's such a huge loss -- breaks my heart all over again 💔

Eleven inches!!! Wow -- I don't think I've ever seen anything like that here ❄️
The most in ten years!

Hi, Christine! 👋 Bummer about the lack of snow... any chance that'll change? (And, do you get to ski often out there?)

Eden is beautiful! Are you going to participate in the Ogden race series? I have family that recommend the Ogden Marathon.

Grew up in Elmira NY, went to college in Buffalo, NY now living in Milton, FL. At 75, my bones don't like the cold anymore.
I can relate!
As I have mentioned previously, my brother used to say, “If the temperature drops below 70F, the weather is broken.”
Hello from Viterbo, Italy. Its a lovely 15 C today, sunny, calm and blue skies.
Hi Ruth!! Benvenuta! (Tell me if I didn't say that right 😃 )
Perfetto!

Martin, Ga. Snowy day. Pups are loving it and so am I with lots of layers on. Thinking the run tomorrow should be interesting.
YES! After a morning of beautifully falling snow, the ground here in Atlanta is a slushy, icy mix -- should be "interesting" here too!
Normal in Eugene, OR.

After doing GTIS in 2023, we went to Vail, CO … had dinner at Vail Village and saw ton of hummingbirds … very cool birds
Aren't they neat??? I'd love to go the the hummingbird festival in Sedona, AZ. It's on the 29th of July. . . About when they start to head South! :)
No way! Is it normal for primroses to bloom that early there?
They did last year. I have pink and dark purple. The next door neighbor said it felt like spring to her. All of her flowers were blooming, too. . . but that was before the ice storm! Be glad it is normally warm where you live!
Cleveland, Ohio - currently in Columbus for medical treatment.
Hope all goes well there, Brynn!
They saved my life so yes, it is going well!
Queens, NY. No snow, almost no snow since I think 2023.
Really? Wow, that's kinda surprising -- I'd have thought New York would get plenty
Savannah, GA!
Cool and rainy later, they say
Dang -- I was hoping my sister (who lives near Savannah) might get a little of the wintry weather...
I am in São Paulo, Brazil. At this moment (12 AM) 25 degreees.
Hi Lucas! I've actually visited São Paulo before, though it's been about twenty years -- loved it!
25 centigrade, correct?
Yes
I’m in Westminster, CO near Denver & Boulder.
Hi Becky! How much snow have you gotten out there?
Hi Terrell. Arctic cold coming in today with some snow. Front here until Wednesday!! Where are you?
I'm in Atlanta -- it should get frigid cold here too!
Button up!
