So you’re in the medical field … will share a true story: younger daughter was home for six weeks back in 2005 after earning her BSN at FSU. After watching a movie with me, she said, β€œI’m gong to go study (for her licensing test).” I asked, β€œYou don’t need my help, do you?” She replied, β€œNo offense, Dad, but this stuff is over your head!”

Ha it is a lot and the school part really sucks. Tell her we are hiring if she wants to come to ny🀣

Currently in route to San Francisco to depart Sunday on cruise that will take us back to Fort Lauderdale via the Panama Canal. Finished 1/2β€”#β€”142 last Sunday in Cocoa, FL. Wife’s broken wing (left arm) is continuing to heal … orthopedic doctor cleared us to travel … he said, β€œJust don’t fall down!” What do I want for Hanukkah? As trite as this sounds, I want continued good health for our extended family … and this includes the gang we call THM Community

Terrell Johnson's avatar

Right back at you, Dave! Hope you and your wife have a safe, uneventful flight!

I wonder if all orthopedic surgeons say that! My doctor said the same thing when I was good to go with my wrist!! :)

It's always going to be books! The Correspondent (Virginia Evans); Buckeye (Patrick Ryan); Ann Patchett's new one. (I think it's out.) The Demon of Unrest (Erik Larson)--and I could go on and on and on........

The gearhead in me wants a Garmin watch, too! I’ve been looking at them given the cyber week sales. My main problem is: there are so many models! I can’t figure out which ones have which features. I’m used to Apple Watch, where they all have basically the same features with some differences in terms of size and battery life. The Ultra models have a little more functionality, but beyond that, it’s not hard to figure out what’s what. With Garmin? Every time I think I have it pinned down, I find yet another model that *could* work and be good for me. Trying to narrow it down is hard!

Terrell Johnson's avatar

I know -- they all seem so similar, don't they? The only criteria I'm using is price; I really don't want to spend over like, $400. Some of them go way over that!

Chris Hansen's avatar

I’m using the same criteria (and same amount) to be honest. I finally asked AI to summarize the feature set of models under that amount, which helped.

When watch shopping, be careful to avoid scope creep. You could easily get carried away and spend upwards of $1200 on a GPS watch. For me, they all kind of do the same thing (track runs, mapping, health metrics, etc.). Fit and comfort were paramount, as was battery life. And I didn't care about music. That's how I settled on the Coros Apex Pro. It has all the features I need for 99% of my runs. And, if it's good enough for Kilian, then surely it'll work for me.

Chris Hansen's avatar

I looked at the Coros models. The only feature it lacks - but a big one for me - is being able to control my music from the watch. I almost always listen to music or podcasts when I run, and not being able to stop/start/advance on the watch would be a bummer. I suppose it's not a dealbreaker, because my headphones have a physical button I can use for all of that, but I like being able to do it on the watch.

John Maynard's avatar

Makes sense. I just use my ear buds to advance/pause/repeat, but if I want to select a specific song, I do have to pull out my phone. Also, on the Coros, I can decline a call from the watch, but I can't accept a call. That has to be done via ear bud (or phone). Still, for me, that feature is a nice-to-have, not a deal breaker.

FYI - if you head over to TheFeed, they have the Garmin 965 on sale for 25% off, and the 265 is 33% off (both are older models, but excellent). The Coros Pace 3 and Pace Pro are also on sale (Coros dropped the prices on these watches now that they've released the 4).

Chris Hansen's avatar

I was looking at both the Garmin 265 (alongside several other models) and the Coros Pace 3. Just unsure about the audio thing. I feel like that would bug as I've gotten so used to it. I wonder if it's worth it.

I've also gotten used to using training plans in the Adidas Running app, which integrates nicely with Workouts on Apple Watch. I'll miss that, but it seems as though both Garmin and Coros have good run training plans as a mostly free resources, as well as customizable ones. I just feel like I'd be starting over from scratch after having used Adidas Running plans for a while now. (This is a whole separate issue from all the rest I mentioned; just musing about it and curious about any experience you have with Coros's training and how it prompts on the watch during a run).

John Maynard's avatar

I've never used Coros training plans, but a buddy of mine uses them -- and likes them. (Two weeks ago, he and I did an 17-mile trail run, and his watch kept beeping, signaling it was time for the next interval ... kind of cool.)

My watch is my favorite piece of gear (and my Coros Armband HRM is a very close second). However, I've grown not to pay too much attention to it during my run. I think we can get so obsessed with our instant pace/HR/VO2 max, etc. that we lose sight of what we're actually doing. Is my Apex Pro perfect? Nope. But, does it give me all the data I need for every run. Absolutely.

Chris Hansen's avatar

I get that - I'm finding myself better able to sense my pace without checking my watch as often, and I only check it a lot when I'm doing an interval or tempo run where I'm constantly changing paces and trying to stay within a set range for each of those intervals. So it's useful to get those signals there. But yeah, totally get that. No knock at all on Coros or any brand from me - I feel like everyone knows their own needs and should buy (or not buy) accordingly.

No gifts. Just peace. Heartfelt, meaningful peace in me despite what I may be going through.

Terrell Johnson's avatar

I love that, Cheri -- that's what I want too. There are those moments that come sometimes, when everyone in my life is okay, and I think, "this, this is what I've always been wanting and hoping for, right here." They don't last -- problems always arise, sooner or later, don't they? -- but I'm so thankful for them when they do. It's kind of like being on a surfboard, on top of the wave for just a moment. You know it won't last all that long, but it's so great for the moment it does.

Cheri Dworak's avatar

Ah but it can last, Terrell. Peace in the storms of life doesn’t need to be elusive. Trust and surrender is what I think leads to peace and joy β™₯️ it is my life’s quest.

A functioning democracy would be nice.

Specific to running, a quiver to hold my poles. I've got everything else I need, though I'm still holding out hope for an entry to WSER and Leadville!

I hope I'm not going to sound like the grinch with this comment.

Just this week, I was reading an article that more than half of Australians receive unwanted Christmas gifts. 76% of people reported that they find it difficult to choose suitable gifts. More than a third of respondents admitted to regifting unwanted items during the holidays, yet more than half said they'd be disappointed to learn a gift they gave had been regifted by the recipient.

I checked out the definition of a gift, and it went something like "A gift is something given voluntarily, without expectation of payment, to express appreciation, love, or to celebrate an occasion". Somehow, the giving and receiving of gifts does not seem to be as it should. Even the use of the words "unwanted gifts" sounds so ungrateful. It would appear that it is more about someone else paying for something we want rather than about appreciating the fact that they thought about us.

Do we just stop giving gifts and spend the money that we would fork out on gifts on ourselves? We'd all get what we want and save a lot of time.

BTW, it's HOT here in Hervey Bay!!

I’ve been eyeing the rabbit cocoon shirt for winter running. I wouldn’t mind getting that for Christmas.

Here’s a confession- I’ve been testing (for free) the Kipchoge running app KOTCHA for over a week, wondering if I should subscribe to it or consider a live coach or group training. Tips from the AI version of the GOAT runner β€œcoach K” gives me stupid happiness. As I read the Friday thread, I took it as a calling and got the annual subscription :-) just now, so this will be my holiday gift to myself
