Sat is my 1st 1/2 as you know . My son Gino “ mom I have my first game of season Sat ( hockey ) you are team manager you can not be late mom “ GAME AT 430. RACE BEGINS 0730. ( great confidence in me lol “ My daughter GIAvonna “ mom I know you lift weights play hockey but you are 53 to old to try this . You will get lost and everyone will be gone home , when you finish “ 🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Late to this. Most of my “racing,” such as it is, is in the spring so all I have coming up are a 10k & Turkey Trot in November. So, for now, lacing up every other day, then, come winter, start gearing up for next spring.
Late to the support party...ran our local 1 mile race and was targeting 8 min; did 8:21. Had been at a wedding the night before, danced up a storm and was tired. Race was at 5 pm and it was HOT! But at least I showed up and did it!
The fact that you showed up after going to a wedding the night before, you could have finished in 20 minutes and I'd still think that was impressive!!! 🙌
For those who haven’t quite ran the training distances you were supposed to, know this: you can do it. In June I ran my first marathon after having both my parents die in March/April and getting COVID in May - my longest training run ended up being a half, though I was putting the weekly miles in and I did it! Go out there and do it!
Looking forward to getting rid of my shin splints... never had it before and never want it again. Cold, compression wraps and rest is the only way to get rid of them. Looking forward to hitting the pavement again but still have about one to two weeks ... Hope everyone stays well...
I'm back in my hometown of Philly this weekend and will train on the Rocky steps and on Heart Attack Hill, which is right around the corner from the Rocky steps. We used to train on that as rowers. I'm getting ready for the Rock n Roll Clearwater halfathon in early October. Fun stuff.
Good luck to you … I did a different Clearwater half 4 years ago across 2 of the 3 bridges you’ll cross … the third one is a long causeway bridge. With your Philly training, you’ll do great.
It is also know as the David Goggins Challenge. The premise is simple it is 12 equally spaced 4 mile runs. The challenge comes that the spacing is 4 hours. So at the start of every 4 hour segment you run 4 miles for a total of 48 miles in 48 hours. The location can be anywhere and the segments can be run on different tracks or the same track. There is the request that a donation be made to your favorite charity.
Hi Terrell- first of all, having these regular threads is already a constant source of encouragement for running. I have been somewhat sidelined since July with plantar fasciitis. A left heal pain started in March while training for a 1/2 but I powered on till the race. The foot doctor suggested a localized shock therapy called EPAT. I chickened out and tried resting for two weeks and now trying some running with more stretching, icing, no more than 2-3 mile runs every other day and will start swimming soon. Was looking forward to running my first post-Covid marathon in October but most likely that is not realistic. Will decide after trying a longer run this Sunday. If I manage without pain, will continue with some basic training for the marathon. If not, will reluctantly postpone -- need as much luck and encouragement for Sunday as I can get (while realizing that I should probably just sit it out)...
Rupa - I took a full 6 almost 8 weeks off for horrible PF a couple of years ago. It was just what I needed. Then I started slow and built up to an 8 mile run in about 2 months...and it went from there. Haven't had an issue since, but I do yoga (10 to 20 mins) a few days a week. Good luck!
Thanks Michelle, I needed to hear this. I realize I was trying to go back too quickly - yesterday’s 7 miler (could not last beyond) was not pleasant even though I tried the run-walk-run approach. Now my right heel also hurts a bit, so body is indeed protesting. Will take up swimming for a bit and take it slower. Great to hear that you have returned to running and have had no flare ups since!
Good luck this Sunday, Rupa! You know, I'd probably have the same reaction as you to the EPAT. I'm sure it's fine, but it's one of those things -- I'm always in favor of trying rest first. How long is your run this Sunday?
Expanding on Terrell thought/lead, I am currently well into a quest I started in March. The quest is to do 13 race pace Half-Marathons in 13 Months. Not 12 in 12 as I had to start with one of my favorite Half's and I did not want to miss it next year. I have completed the first 6 of them and have the next 2 paid for and the two after that I am calculating which ones to do. I had a plan than an inaugural half popped up and now I am considering my options. I am also looking for a destination race in February but that is why to far out at this time. If anyone has a suggestion for a half tht they are doing in mid February let me know. As for after that I was thinking about taking a few months off of training, and start working on the 4x4x48 challenge. this is going to take some getting used to as I usually only run once a day this training will require at least twice if not three times a day, just to see how my body will react.
The A1A half marathon in mid-February in Fort Lauderdale, FL is always a winner … this coming February, I’ll be doing this race for the 15th year in a row.
Nothing this week, nor real soon, but still looking forward to this "race" season. Gonna run a 15k for first time this year, in addition to a couple 1/2's and 10k's.
Tomorrow I'm running the Mt Nebo Chicken Fry 10k in Dardanelle, AR. I've been mounting a very slow comeback to running after being injured on and off for several years. I have been running consistently now for about 8 months since the last injury. At age 58 I'm trying to be careful and not over do it. Tomorrow will be a good test. I plan to run a half marathon in November. Love reading the weekly articles and posts!
Thanks so much, Paul! Good luck tomorrow -- and I think you're right, a 10K will be both a good test and a way to ease back into running longer distances. I love the 10K distance, actually -- it might be my favorite. Which half do you plan to run this November?
I plan to run the Jim Rowland FCA River Valley Half in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Haven't ran a half since 2019 so very excited to give it a try. And thanks for the encouragement!
Happy Friday!! So when I post this keep in mind what it was like and all your struggles when you first started running lol . My goal as you know is to just finish the Bird in hand half . My first ever and to me it’s enormous . To read these extraordinary accomplishments of 20-100 miles is just breathtaking really. Consistency, like anything in life is key . My max is 7 miles ( all incline around Lancaster not much flat terrain).
I’m proud of myself running ( no break no walk) 2 miles again and DONT LAUGH PLEASE . 30 min. Breathing much more controlled . Today is 3 mile run no breaks no walking under 40. I will do my best . Again , I am newbie so I don’t have your amazing accomplishments YET LOL
We laugh at the WTF (where’s the finish) running shirt, but your efforts will soon be rewarded … one mile down, then 2, then 3 and before you know it, the medal and the bragging rights will be yours. Good luck.
@Dawn, I remember starting with a 1 mile loop that I had to stop and walk in the middle of. I did it every day for a week, and then moved up to 2 miles, and then 3, etc. until I could run 5 miles without stopping or walking. It took a couple months! But your body is stronger than you think it is! Once you let it know what you're up to. :) After 1 year of running I ran my first 1/2 marathon - it was a huge and scary distance for me. But it was super fun! So I did another 7 months later. Then a 25 mile race 1 year later. Now I'm training for a 50k race. A distance I could NEVER fathom myself even attempting. It's huge, and scary, and maybe even crazy. But I've learned you really can do whatever you set out to accomplish. Your enthusiasm and willpower can take you farther than you ever realized was possible. I'm proud of you, too!
Thank you !! So excited but so nervous at the same time . Do you all still get that feeling deep in the abdomen at a start of any race ? Even a 5k ? Child’s play for this group lol
Nerves? Just “know” that you are part of the running community … from the first timers to the old-timers … from the elite runners … my oh my, they are a joy to watch … to the joggers and walkers. IT’S FAMILY!
I still get pre race yeeks regardless of the distance. I try to use that to get a good warm up in prior to the race. Sometimes the workout takes longer than the race. Your good!
I have a half marathon in January that I'd deferred due to pandemic + plans to have a kid in 2022. I just started running again 5 months postpartum (so about a month in now!). It had been a good 9 months since I'd run (I did a lot of walking during pregnancy) and WOW it feels like starting over, but I also feel proud that I've made a lot of improvement during this first month. But I have a long way to go still! So this is twofold...both to ask for encouragement and to say, if this new mom who's juggling pumping/breastfeeding a baby and working full time can run, SO CAN YOU!! I believe in us!
Crazy thing is doctors clear moms to exercise after 6 weeks! I was NOT ready despite having been active before and well into pregnancy. Decided to listen to my body and take it slow to not risk injury. Running the 3M half in Austin!
The human body is so genius and amazing. You got this! Amazing how we can start over and over again from any set back or time off. Congrats on your sweet darling! Blessings! Keep going...it's a long way to January.
First, congratulations on the baby, Christiana! That is so amazing and wonderful. Second, I totally get where you're coming from, the feeling of starting over. I'm so impressed that you're starting back this soon, too! Way to go 🙌
Thank you! I actually tried sooner but my knees said, "Excuse me ma'am, just what do you think you're doing?" so I scrapped that and spent a couple months doing bodyweight and then light weight strength training and biking to work back up to running again!
I'll go first 😃 I was actually in need of a little encouragement myself earlier, as I've been slowly coming back to running after laying off for a good part of the summer. I've run three 3-mile runs so far this week -- today will be my 4th -- which is something I'm proud of, because I know consistency is what I'm aiming for right now.
This morning, at a monthly breakfast thing I do with a group of friends here in Atlanta, one of the guys at the breakfast casually mentioned he'd just come back from Colorado, where they're running the Leadville Trail 100-Miler. He went to cheer on a friend who was participating in the bike race, and then he ran the last 20 miles of the run with another friend. Not that I want to go out to Leadville right now, but I was inspired -- running something like that is dreaming *really* big, and it got me thinking that I should expand my own horizons and dream a little bigger.
What about you? Do you have any big dream races/places/goals that you haven't let yourself consider, but maybe ought to?
Just still amazes me that people can run 100 miles! Those who do, hats off to you. I'm just happy to be back running - was involved in a pretty bad car accident [was hit] so my dream was simply getting back to running. Got the Fort De Soto 15k run at the end of September to look forward to still. Running has been a great way to push myself to return to some normalcy [not that it'll ever be so] and I'm grateful for it., as well this page. Spent a lot of time reading here from May thru July, provided the needed motivation!
Heal well and stay healthy. I have the King of the Hill 5k Labor Day weekend in Davie … west of Fort Lauderdale … first race post-Covid19 so I’m coming back slowly
Same here! It seems so far beyond the scope of what's even imaginable. But people do it all the time now -- ultras have exploded in popularity over the past 5-10 years. It's kinda crazy!
Now that is SO true. Not with my life the way it is now -- a job + little kids -- I wouldn't want to be away from them the amount of time I'd have to be to train for those. The half marathon is really my absolute limit right now. Probably sticking between 10Ks and 10-milers, actually. But really I'm just running to enjoy running right now, not working on training for anything. I've been leaving my smartwatch at home, too, which makes me not focus on the tracking. It's kinda nice!
Like I have told folks before, I lace up, go to the race, do it … and get the same medal and t-shirt everyone else gets. It doesn’t get any better than that!
You're finally catching on , Terrell! I've always run to enjoy the outdoors. Got caught up in the metrics for awhile, but I'm really glad I got a health setback.
I run for being out on the trail and eating blackberries along the way! :)
BTW, how is that Android app coming along. I'm excited to try out the Threads!
Me too! When I grew up, it was 82 miles from where we lived to Reno, NV. We went in the old Ford, Jezebel, (people used to name their cars!) once I week. Seemed like it took forever with my Dad driving at 40 mph. Knowing every inch of the road like I do, It seems like people would be crazy to spend a lot of money and actually train for that distance on foot.
Good luck on your 15K, run when you can, walk if you need to. Your body will tell you what to do! :)
Like Adam said - dream big! Consistency adds up, so you're absolutely on the right track with the week you've had! But also, that friend who ran the last 20 miles with his friend is a GOOD friend!
The biggest I've done is the Squamish 50/50, you run 50 miles on day one and 50 km on day two. Like you, I would like to tackle a 100miler at some point!
It was last fall, October 2021 :) It went amazing! I trained for 9.5 months with Ridgeline Athletics and I was ready to go when race day came. Felt amazing and from that experience I know we are all capable of amazing things, just need to train right and fuel right!
So I showed them these comments and thread they were blown away by the ages alone lol
I have such jitters already …
Sat is my 1st 1/2 as you know . My son Gino “ mom I have my first game of season Sat ( hockey ) you are team manager you can not be late mom “ GAME AT 430. RACE BEGINS 0730. Congratulations … you’re my hero. Diagnosed with Covid on 8/4 … 5k comin labor day weekend and half in October … your recovery is my inspiration
Good luck with those runs! You’ve got this!
That is super encouraging Anita - wow.
I'm so sorry for your loss, Anita!
Looking forward to getting rid of my shin splints... never had it before and never want it again. Cold, compression wraps and rest is the only way to get rid of them. Looking forward to hitting the pavement again but still have about one to two weeks ... Hope everyone stays well...

This is really cool, Mark! Take a photo and send it to me when you have it, and I can share it with our group if you like!

Can't wait for it. I live right on the course and train on the Sand Key and Clearwater Bridges during every run. Is that cheating?
Small world ... my niece and her husband live on Sand Key

Thanks for this, Terrell. After a doctor-imposed summer of no-running, I've been given the all clear and excited to get back out there.
Make sure you don't get too excited and over do it...
Slow and steady that first month
Really excited to hear this for you, Neal!! 🙌🙌

It needs to be at least 8 miles to be still considering the MCM which is end Oct. And the longest I have done in the last 2 weeks is 3.5 :-)
Will let you know!

Good luck! First time out, especially after a long break, is exciting.
Best of luck! Been out of running since Memorial Day with a stress fracture and hoping to start running again this weekend. Let’s do this!!!
Hope your run goes well and it’s the first of many runs!
Thanks so much, Paul! Good luck tomorrow -- and I think you're right, a 10K will be both a good test and a way to ease back into running longer distances. I love the 10K distance, actually -- it might be my favorite. Which half do you plan to run this November?

50 miles of running !!!!!! THATS AMAZING !! I’m 5 days out of my 1st 1/2 at BIH. I’m so nervous already !!
It is amazing what the body can do. But what would it do without the mind?
Congratulations!! :)
Who's laughing? Pat yourself on the back!! :)
4 miles is long, 13 is longer. We all know how hard it is! Keep moving. The finish line.is the best part.
Your good!
Sure! But one always does. It's part of the fun of racing.
Great work. Good luck with the half - just remember that the finish is what matters, whenever you get there!
Thank you !! You only have 4 hours lol
All progress is worth celebrating, no laughing here!
Congrats, and you go Mama!!
It's amazing that you're already back and running, however much it amounts to. Which half are you running in January?
Crazy thing is doctors clear moms to exercise after 6 weeks! I was NOT ready despite having been active before and well into pregnancy. Decided to listen to my body and take it slow to not risk injury. Running the 3M half in Austin!
The human body is so genius and amazing. You got this! Amazing how we can start over and over again from any set back or time off. Congrats on your sweet darling! Blessings! Keep going...it's a long way to January.
Thank you Emily - you're right, the human body is incredible!

That’s amazing !!! GOD bless you and your family !!! I am a newbie
Thank you Dawn! I might as well be a newbie right now too! Keep at it and you'll be a seasoned runner soon enough!
I'll go first 😃 I was actually in need of a little encouragement myself earlier, as I've been slowly coming back to running after laying off for a good part of the summer. As I've always said. . . it can be done, but where would you find time to train?
There's a great line by Samuel Johnson, when someone asked him once about traveling to a city: "Worth seeing? Yes! But not worth going to see." 😃
Excellent!
Now that is SO true. Not with my life the way it is now -- a job + little kids -- I wouldn't want to be away from them the amount of time I'd have to be to train for those. The half marathon is really my absolute limit right now. Probably sticking between 10Ks and 10-milers, actually. It's taken me long enough, hasn't it? 🤣
You already have proof to back up what you want to achieve !!! GO FOR IT
Like Adam said - dream big! Consistency adds up, so you're absolutely on the right track with the week you've had! But also, that friend who ran the last 20 miles with his friend is a GOOD friend!
Isn't he? That's seriously a dedicated friend right there.
Dream big and go for it Terrell!
Have you ever run anything approaching that distance?
The biggest I've done is the Squamish 50/50, you run 50 miles on day one and 50 km on day two. Like you, I would like to tackle a 100miler at some point!
Wow! How long ago did you run it? How did it go?
It was last fall, October 2021 :) It went amazing! I trained for 9.5 months with Ridgeline Athletics and I was ready to go when race day came. Felt amazing and from that experience I know we are all capable of amazing things, just need to train right and fuel right!
I'd love to! Not sure I'm ready for 100 miles, though! That might be a little *too* big just yet! 🤣
