Love the message. Being in the moment helps me enjoy the good and realize the bad will pass. I remember finishing my first marathon. It was virtual and family and friends surprised me at the “finish line”. I cried like a baby. It was one of those moments. Take care brother and rest up.
Since I've been dissed by my fellow runners... they stopped a month and a half ago, it'll be just me and my bride on her bike... she's my moving water stop. We plan to hit four subdivisions we have friends in... maybe they will give me the extra lift I might need... hurt my left knee a while back and have run the last four weeks with compression sleeves on both knees... Forget "no pain...no gain" Will not have a P.R. but will get it done...
Odd. I picked up "The Courage to Start" looking for inspiration last night. Flipped to page 73-Beyond the Edge of Comfort in Chapter 5. As usual, Baldwin has many words of wisdom, most of them applicable to my state of mind.
Yes, I am beyond the edge of comfort, but not due to running--more to do with rental prices in Washington and how they have gotten out of reach due to the greed of the landlords! Have to buy or build a place. . .
If the one rental I have in mind works out in Carnation, WA, it would be so wonderful! Real Trails all over the place, several that I've run before for a Half and a 10K. Also a fruit orchard ( a U-Pick) and a farmers market. I'd feel like I had died and gone to heaven! Me and my small towns. . .I love them!
Appreciated your story! Glad the old lady at your marathon gave you the inspiration to keep going--they're like that! ;)
I'll probably take up running full time once we get settled. Enjoy you time off, you deserve it. :)
Thanks, Nilima! I really, really hope the place you're talking about in Carnation works out for you -- it sounds so lovely. I love small towns too! I don't live in one (we're in Atlanta) but I always love getting out of the city and into a place that's cozier. Keep me posted on how the search goes 🙌
I’ll be at the Indy Mini! Definitely going to take it slow and enjoy the moment…still feeling effects of covid and finding running a struggle but going for half number 13 anyway! Not worried about finishing; I can walk forever!
I did the Eugene half this past weekend and it was amazing. I finished just under my goal time but can say it is a bit daunting to have the elite runners finish the full marathon before I did - but by only a couple minutes! The course was challenging, but not overly so and to finish inside Hayward Field was incredible. Prior to the race I did not realize that this is a qualifier for the 2024 Olympics. To run a race with that caliber of an athlete is so cool! I can’t recommend this race enough. All that being said, I am glad my training is over with. Good luck everyone getting ready to run your half or full marathon!
As always, great comments & great quotes. I ran my half this past Sunday in Binghamton, N.Y. - not a real destination race, but I grew up up there. Great weather, a free beer at the end, and shaved 5 minutes off last year’s time. Thanks for your inspiration and enjoy your time off. Good wishes for everyone running this weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms.
Thank you, Katie! There so is -- I'm trying to learn to pay attention when I feel the need coming on, rather than waiting for when it's glaringly obvious. Your newsletter has helped me learn that 🙌
I always look forward to reading your beautiful words. I am planning to sign up for a half next year and actually just finished my first official 5K race :)

Thanks, brother! What a great, wonderful, moving experience that must have been -- that is so, so cool that they did that for you!! 🙌

That actually sounds nice, to have your wife ride along as you run. Take it easy on that knee 😃
Keep on truckin'! Hats off to your water stop! Will get virtual in as soon as we find a place to live! Oh, Get Well Soon! :)

Will do! We go out to see the place today. It is still under construction. . . but who said life was going to be easy?! :)
Good luck!
Thanks!!
My Mother’s Day gift to myself will be to run the Half Marathoner Community Half Marathon this Sunday!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.
Love hearing that, Maria!!! I'll probably do a discussion thread on Sunday so we can see how everyone's run went. Stay tuned 😃
Happy Mother's Day to you, too!!
Great writing & advice! Love this one for the reminder to enjoy our runs & races. 👍🏼
Thanks, Corrina! Have any big races coming up? Or just runs you're excited about?

That's right! Good luck this weekend at the Indy Mini -- that race looks so amazing. Have you run it before?
I haven’t! It always sold out before I could get in! Very excited to do it! My 10th state too!

Thank you so much, Jim! And congrats on the five minutes faster! That's awesome 🙌
Enjoy the time off, Terrell! There's a lesson in taking a break, too.

Excellent; thanks. Enjoy your time away!
Thank you for the shoutout, Terrell! 🙌🏽
I signed up for 2 Vacation Races—Lake Powell in October & Zion in March. I can’t wait! They put on awesome races!!! How about you?
