I'm in! My goal is to simply notice one thing on each run, and then to journal about it. Could be a feeling, a thought, or something outside myself. At the end of the month, I'll share what I noticed in my newsletter. I think I'll need to carry a small notebook and pencil to keep these things from floating away before I have a chance to write them down.
I'm definitely up for a running challenge! My goal will be a frequency goal rather than a distance goal, if that's ok. I'm going to shoot for running at least 3 days per week all month, plus at least 1 day of cross-training. I'm excited to get in the runs!
Great challenge, My May goal is 1 mile. After a year of recovering from back surgery and endless rehab, My goal is to run 1 mile on May 31st. I am able to walk and do a 5k every day during rehab. Appreciate the gift we have in running,. sounds like you have gained a new runner, with your friend.
This, I love — you’re coming back from something that I can only imagine has been arduous (to say the least). Let’s keep in touch — I really want you to hear how it goes.
Thank you Terrell, long story short a year ago I had just got accepted to do the NY marathon and easily (but slow) finished the first half of the season. Came to work the next day and set up a web site for a line of clothes I was creating (on your right running) and about to begin to chronicle the observations from a slow runner running towards a dream. Then I was on my back and four surgeries later and still a lot of recovery to go. However, I am at least now able to walk but I still am jealous of the runners I see. I began following yourself, some other runner/writers and such as well, on Sub Stack and medium, joined the Fb communities that were similar to myself, over 55 and a 5 hour marathoner type. I am excited to get back to both running and writing. first title "Don't call it a comeback" Keep running and writing, Detroit International race is a great half to look at.
I know just what you're going through. In '90's 3 back surgeries. I 97, the last one, bone fusion. Still hae hardware in my back. Kept walking everyday. In 2001 while I was in Savannah Ga I was walking around a park, which is 1 mile. I wanted to run so badly, my daughter said do it !!!!! Felt so awesome. Then in 2002 I heard they were adding half marathon to the mara in Nashville. I live 50 min from there. I had my husband sign me up that afternoon. Not knowing 1 thing about it. I did it end of Apr,,, turned 50 end of May. I've run 40 halfs now,,, and will be 72 29th this month. Still doing them..... Worse thing for anyone is Sitting to much.....I hope to do one this summer, but have one in September,,,, in PA, the Amish run....
Said all that to say don't give up..... never ever. Sounds like you have the perfect plan going.... best of Everything to you.
Truly inspiring and relatable, when I do my walks my mind still thinks run, (I don’t, and won’t be able to for a longtime). I go as far as walking my running path. I am so happy to hear of your success in getting back to running and doing halves. I so miss this sport and even as slow as I was. Just the joy and community of the runners. I hope to be able to report back within the next year of doing a half, even if it is DLF. Inspiring and inspired thank you
Ok. I will take Courtney’s challenge and raise my own bar to 120 miles of running& walking this May. This Saturday there is a 24 hour event with a one mile trail. I hope to do 8 hours🙌👣🙌
Hi Terrell…Well the 24 hour Ultra event extracted 7 hours and 20 miles from me despite badly blistered left foot for last 5 miles. Lessons learned: 1) This 77 year old body can do more than the mind thinks and the last 5 miles demonstrated that. 2) I promised my precious wife, this was my last major athletic “event” as I severely hobbled about afterwards. However I am eyeing another in September. Be careful what you promise in the midst of pain. Especially to your spouse 3). I must be in better walking/running condition. At 77, I was the oldest participant & this body needs more training before next attempt at 30+ miles 4) I am always too anxious to sleep before any athletic endeavor. Yesterday was no exception. I must figure that out if I am going to enjoy participating in the future.
Clark, just the fact that you did this -- at 77! -- is amazing to me. That you even stepped up to the starting line with the thought, "I can do this." Seven hours is just an incredible number to me, I'm not sure I'd be able to last that long in any kind of race!! I love the way you frame it, too: "be careful what you promise in the midst of pain." Take care and rest as much as you need!!!
Thanks Terrell. I have 3 dear friends, two of which are Ultra Runners and much younger (55 & 65) and the third my age who has become a walker after many Marathons. Interestingly, all are doctors and 3 of us are Vegan. We call ourselves the “Quirky little wolf pack” and want to keep moving the rest of our lives. The youngest is a female who has run the “Tahoe 200” 3 times and Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon 3 times as well. Bottom line: Hanging out with these fabulous friends makes “showing up” non-negotiable. Just imagine if we all had such a great group of friends to keep us striving for excellence while laughing much of the way!!!!
I'm in for the May challenge. I've been so busy outside of running that I've even been not running [something I never did] so this will help me refocus and give me motivation to do this.
I'm going to shoot for 100 miles for May of actual running [tend to also do a lot of walking] along with 30 hours of walking for the month!
Thanks for this Terrell! I’m a few weeks back to running after 3 months off with heel spur/plantar fasciitis, and I’m back to 3x/week and steadily increasing distance. I’d like to aim for 40km this month as I get back into the routine.
Running actually feels great! As long as I do a ton of warming up, stretching, and rolling, and plan to take it a bit easy the rest of the day! But long walks and lots of standing are still causing some pain, so it’s everything outside of running that’s still being impacted.
This post came at the perfect time! I haven't put my sneakers on yet this week, I'm hunched over my desk, cursing at my computer, and for lunch today I made myself a half batch of rice krispies treats and ate.... well, more than I care to admit, and enough to make me feel nauseous. Time to get back out there. My goal will be to get outside and run ANY distance every day this month, rain or shine.
GA Terrell -- As part of a Strava group we run at least 1 mile everyday -- I have been averaging just over 5 miles / day. God willing I am able to stay healthy I will shoot for 140 miles in May. Thank You and have a great month
Terrell, thank you for initiating this challenge! I definitely need motivation, as I went on the shelf Dec 30 with a bad back issue and have not run since, although I’ve worked back into hiking with my pup.
So my goal is modest: start running once this week, and get up to 3-4 runs per week by the end of the month. Also throw in at least 2-3 hikes. (I have no excuse for either any more!)
I’m in with a goal of 80 miles. I’ve been running about 60 to 70 miles each month, but I need to up it for my training for the half I’m running on June 1.
Pisgah Half-Mare-amathon in Versailles, KY. The Mare is because the rub is through three or four horse farms. I ran it two years ago, and it was tremendous.
In the spirit of making realistic goals for myself, I’m going to go for 50 miles. I’ve been inconsistent lately between work and being a single mom to two active kids. I think this is exactly the type of thing to get me back on track. Thanks Terrell!
Right back at you, Heather! That’s exactly what this month will be for me too — getting back on track. I know a little of what you’re talking about, having one 10-year-old to follow around. Good luck!!
Just finished one of my hardest half’s ever but like the idea of seeing everyone’s posts and pics. My goal for the next couple of months is strength and length with a few runs a week thrown in.
I'm in for run/walk three times per week for at least 50 miles this month. I'm getting back to running and am taking it slow to give my knees time to catch up :)
I'm in! My goal is to simply notice one thing on each run, and then to journal about it. Could be a feeling, a thought, or something outside myself. Mike, I love this idea! What’s your newsletter?
I lovingly (naively?) call this my newsletter... https://runninglightly.substack.com/
I'm new here.
I think I follow you on Threads! 🧵
Yes, indeed!
Great idea … will follow through.

I love this, Jennifer! A frequency goal is a great (and creative) way to approach it. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!!

I love this so much. Thank you Clark! I run a 50 miler this November...you are inspiring me. I can do it!
Clark!! WOW! You are amazing. Thank you Terrell for sharing this. Congratulations Clark.
Hey Terrell, it's been too long!

It has, Stan! Great to hear from you, my man. 100 miles is a fantastic goal — I’ll definitely be cheering you on 👏

Nice! I'm bummed to hear you had the plantar fasciitis experience too... but glad you're back to three times a week! How is it feeling?

I do the same (with the rice krispies).... far more often than I'd like to admit :)

140 miles is amazing! That's over-achieving!! :)
Thelma and Louise in Moab - boulders, sand and rocks
I’m in ! This is just the motivation I needed right now ! I’m going to work towards 4 days a week at 4 miles each day. Thanks k
That’s perfect, Kay! I might just do the exact same thing 🙌

I love this! I'm going to shoot for 25 miles a week walking / running. Travelling during two of the weeks, so it'll be nice to explore new trails.
Nice!! 25 miles per week is an excellent goal — especially if you get to run some great trails!
I’m in! Looking forward to sharing — and glad I found this newsletter a few months ago.
Really glad to have you aboard, Fran!
