I was around for all the 60s, and the late 60s were even more tumultuous than the early years of the decade. At The Daily Cal at Berkeley, we fought over who would get to wear the gas masks.

Before Berkeley, I was in the Midwest, read to freeze my toes and eat chili.

WOW! So you were really there back then? What was working on The Daily Cal like? (And did you face the tear gas?) What's the weather like where are you now, btw?

I was more an editor than a reporter, but I did get a few facefuls of tear gas. The Free Speech movement was largely over when I got there in 1969, but Vietnam protests and the invasion of Cambodia were still in the future.

I think a lot of climate refugees might end up in the Pacific Northwest, though we do have earthquakes... It is mild here and despite the rep of being rainy, it doesn't rain in the summer. Portland gets less rain than NYC.

Then you remember Cafe Mediterraneum on Telegraph! . . . and the upstairs. Wasn't it the best? The cappuccinos were superb and had some kick to them unlike Starbucks nowadays--and Bluebeard Boots where I learned to make sandals. It was just a little ride down from Tahoe on the Lambretta. Lived in the Midwest, too. So cold we had to make the dog stay inside while splitting wood outside! And the spring floods were pretty heavy. . . but there were always the neighbors to help. Seemed the coal stove worked non stop in the winter. . .the tornadoes kinda stopped everything in the summer. . . and don't forget making pickles in the west window in 102 degree temps. . .

One day, Nilima, I want to hear your whole life story -- hearing about all the places you've lived is a trip!

And I yours! Georgia is another world away from me, though I have visited there!

My little little brother sent me some photos over Christmas. They were of me and my big brother in Black Springs, NV (north of Stead) when I was about 2 years old snow all over and an igloo my dad built for us . . . I remembered the dog. . . Blackie, who was a black Labrador that I got to ride on like a horse. . . he was so big! and another picture. . .I must have been about 6 or 7 holding a muskrat by the tail, that my dad had just trapped.

It has been an interesting life. . . reads like an old time story book!

Ah, the 60s - we were in Minot, ND - snow, strong winds and cold (chill factor went to -50!) Then Denver and finished out the 60s in Cheyenne, WY. Not much rebellion, especially in Wyoming - very conservative.

As for now in Northern Virginia - a foot of snow - nasty winds so doing a lot of treadmill time. Have a playlist on a cd - one of my favorites is "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.

Looking forward to warmer weather so I ca get out on the running/bike paths along the parkway!

A foot already! Wow... I've seen photos of what it's been like up there this week, and it looks amazing (to this Georgia boy, at least!)

It's not that bad. When we lived in South Dakota, we had one blizzard that completely blocked us in. we had to go out the 2nd story window and slide down the drift and dig out the entrance way!

You had to go to a 2nd story window?!! That's an insane amount of snow... wow! I took a trip to Oregon's Crater Lake National Park once, and saw snow piled up on the side of the road that went way above my car. Otherwise I couldn't even conceive of snow like that!

It was that high because of the drifting snow - most places were 3-4 feet deep.

That must have been fun. North Dakota had the worst blizzards in 100 years when we moved up there. . . it was in the 90s. Nice to have a bobcat to dig us out!

In Minnesota, snowfall could be tremendous. Once my brothers shoveled the drive and piled the snow up about 12 feet by the street. I don't know how my mom got the car out onto busy 90th Street in Bloomington.

Steppenwolf! one of my favorites, too. Spent a whole summer's evening with the group at North Tahoe dancing my head off! :)

glad for you that you get to play!!. . . it was about this time last year(1/17/24) that we got our famous Ice storm in Central OR and the Columbia Gorge really got it. . .I've heard we had the wildfires, too, about 10 years ago. They must have been fairly close to where we now live. All the neighbors remember them. . .

...And here I am on the coast of Maine and we have zero snow!! I believe we have a chance of flurries coming our way Saturday. The wind has been quite strong, so I decided to use the treadmill at our YMCA this morning. Tomorrow looks like a great running day here in Maine, so I'll be back outside.
