Also, I loved your court story! I have a similar story. When I was very young, I was driving home on a New Year's Day afternoon and the freeway I was on was deserted. With the open road ahead, I quickly got up to 88 mph. It didn't take long before I was pulled over. The cost of the ticket was astronomical and I was making barely above minimum wage. I went to court, not to fight the ticket, which I knew I deserved, but to ask for an extension and a payment plan on it. The judge said to me, "Are you sure you were going that fast? Is it possible you were going less than 80?" I answered that I think I was going that fast. He added with emphasis, "Because if you WERE going under 80, the cost would be a LOT less!" He look pointedly at me, and I finally got it! "YES!!! I really DON'T think I was going THAT fast!" That was my experience with the Mercy of the Court.
I think it’s a great idea! I think there are a few of us here in the Phoenix area. I’d be happy to identify a spot and meeting time if others are interested 😊. Please let me know!
Love the idea of a monthly meet and run- I am 2 hours North of Atlanta so would probably join the Atlanta group unless I find someone else who lives near Martin Ga!!
Awesome, Catherine! My idea would be to run in different spots, especially along some places like the Alpharetta Greenway Trail and others like Kennesaw Mountain, but I think it’d be fun to go a little further north and meet you where you are. Let’s think on it!
I am definitely interested! I'm based in SF - not sure what's the best way to organize that but maybe there's a way to send out a form to figure out where people who are interested are based and then group those people together on substack chat, email, slack, or whatever way works best?
Oh, totally decentralized -- I'd imagine we could make a connection via a Friday Thread or via direct messages here, and then arrange places/times/dates to run from there. And from then on, it would be totally up to you!
I learned the name, Emmet Till, in middle school; but, as I would come to learn later, it was a very skeletal history. I had no idea the extent of his suffering, or the heartless ness of the actions of grown men. I'd not seen a picture of him. He was described to me as ' a young black man', but never was his actual age,14!!!
Thanks for sharing the excerpt, It will take a lot to read this but I think it is an important read.
Very important -- and totally absorbing at the same time. I know it can be hard to read tough subject material like this, but Thompson writes in an almost novelistic way, that I feel carried along by the story. It's really good.
Great question, Clark -- I should have been more specific! Basically, it would mean a running club that could meet up on a regular basis, whether that's weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc., in places that you'd like to run. So, I'd like to start the first one (most likely) here in Atlanta, on a monthly basis, where we could meet for a 4 to 5 to 6 mile run, and then grab coffee afterward. (Totally spitballing here; probably needs some work!)

I LOVE this story, Maria!! What a stroke of luck -- sometimes it happens, you know? Love love love this.
I have never run with a group, but I would make an exception for HM peeps! In the L.A. area here. Specifically the San Gabriel Valley.
Awesome!!! I'll keep you posted.

I would love to run with others who might happen to live on the coast of Maine!!
Someday I hope to come up there to run myself! I'll keep you posted on whether we can get a group of readers together there.
Many thanks, Terrell! There's so many scenic routes for sure.

Awesome! I may start a Chat thread in the Substack app to start with -- I bet San Francisco would have quite a few people who'd be interested!
Are we tied to the "mothership" and if so, in what ways? Or totally decentralized and each THM Does its own thing?

Terrell, unsure what a THM in our respective cities actually means? Can you be a bit more specific?

How many subscribers live in the Shreveport/Bossier area?
