Other than a single string of orange lights draped over the hedge in front of the house, the rest of our decorations are inside. October 1st, the strings of lights go up in the foyer along with a Pumpkin Snoopy. November 1st ( the day after Halloween and what my brother told our girls was “October thirty-tooth), all things Halloween get put away and the Turkey Lights go up in the foyer. It doesn’t take much to figure out what’s next ... yep, on Friday, the turkey lights get put away for another year and the ton of Chanukah decorations come out.
My wife has even managed to find holiday neckerchiefs that get tied around the neck of a stone cat that sits on the front porch.
Time to annoy the folks “up north” ... after I hit POST, I’m going to go swim laps in our pool (not heated)! I hope everyone out there in our running community has the warmest of holidays.
Terrell, I subscribe to your “wonderful”publication because your perspective on all things, “Running & Being” is so poignant, mature & joyful... many times, all beautifully blended together as is today’s Thanksgiving message!
Thank you for always setting the right tone and stepping up as you so frequently do. We are lucky to have you share so much of your “personal”take with us and that added value makes reading you and your followers comments
My entire sense of humor comes from just a few sources: Bugs Bunny, Martin Short, Jerry Seinfeld and John Candy 🤣 -- and as I think of Candy, how he combined drama and comedy together was just perfect.
Just another perspective…I always put my Christmas decorations up before thanksgiving. Certainly not November 1st, but sometime before thanksgiving. But please understand that this is my way of being able to slow down and enjoy thanksgiving with my family. Thanksgiving day is at our house with Greg’s family, and the weekend after thanksgiving we spend with my dad. My husband and son own grocery stores, so thanksgiving is definitely not a 4 day weekend for them. They get half a day off for thanksgiving, and a full day off at Christmas. Anyway, I do not want to spend the weekend after thanksgiving taking down thanksgiving decorations and putting up Christmas decorations. Instead, I spend it eating and playing games with my family. And if you wait until the next weekend, well we’re practically to Christmas and in the bustle of shopping and Christmas parties. Anyway, it’s just a different view of what is happening for some people. Putting it up ahead of time is my way of getting to really appreciate thanksgiving and enjoy my family!!
I have a routine for fall/ winter decorations. Fall starts on or about Oct 1 with standard pumpkins, corn stalks and hay bales. One week before Halloween those decorations come out. November 1st “ish” Halloween comes down and thanksgiving goes up. Friday after they come down and fall decor is removed. Christmas decorations go up that weekend after much rearranging of boxes in storage. I do not care for the regression of start dates of commercial holiday sale, movies and the like.
Trail run tomorrow morning to start the holiday right. Happy holidays to all.
Love Planes Trains & Automobiles... Lowe’s had Christmas decorations out in September and was playing Christmas music. When will the madness stop?!? Lol. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
I completely agree with you about Thanksgiving. It has its downsides--stressful for many people, centered around food (which can be extremely difficult for many)--but it's also a holiday everyone can share, and it can be customized to anybody's traditions.
Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for the nod to Home for the Holidays--directed by Jodie Foster and also featuring Anne Bancroft and Claire Danes--one of the best movies about the travails of spending the holidays with your dysfunctional family-- who you love in spite of it all...One of my all time favorites.
It may 'read' a little dated--but I think it's great. It's what got me and my brother through "those" family events. The local art museum is showing it in December--so it must still hold up.
After decades in health care, I retired from my hospital job this past summer. This is the first time In many years that I have been able to spend extended time with my family at Thanksgiving. I do hope that readers will remember those who keep working through the holidays and be thankful for their hard work and dedication.
Son-in-law is bedside nurse in NC. Daughter works for company that can put organs to be transplanted on machines that keep them viable for 24 hours she did bedside nursing for years befor that. With all that, I have a healthy admiration and respect for the entire medical community… but nurses in particular.
I get Thanksgiving off this year. Everyone is coming to my house (expect around 40 folks). I have to be at work tomorrow by 7 and work a twelve hour shift, so get home by 8. I also work Saturday and Sunday, so 4 days off around Thanksgiving just isn't a thing for me at all.
Sounds really stressful. . . take it as it comes. I've got a week of moving and pitching things out ahead of me. Not fun at all, but when I'm done I'm hoping for a clean slate. Take care1
Happy Thanksgiving to all! Beautiful in day in the PacNW. No, life does not revolve around the holidays. Every day you are alive is a day for celebration and appreciation. :)
Terrell. . . I am reading Tuesday with Morrieie off and on when I get a chance.
Compliment intended. . .did you know your writing is much like Mitch Albom??
I can cope with the early decorations. Early sales (Christmas at Costco started in September), is annoying, but I shrug it off. What drives me insane is the Christmas music!!! I like it, but not starting on November 1. That is 2 months of the same music over and over again. It loses its charm.
Have ti agree, Halloween starting in August or before gets to me. My family had one day holidays and I've stuck with it for my entire life. Consumerism did not have a chance!

Right back at you, Dave!

Oh wow, thank you Clark!!!! This means more to me than you know -- I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving too!
I love Planes, Trains & Automobiles so much. Truly a classic.

You must be a riot at parties!!! I'm not even sure how all those would combine!

BTW, I love both of those movies!! 😍
I confess … Hallmark movies are my jam.

We saw the same thing here around mid-September. Crazy, right?
i saw that movie home for the holidays last year! i thought it was pretty good.

Portion control can be so difficult
so much fun and worthwhile! Happy Thanksgiving ALL❗️♥️❗️

Going to give it a watch this week! Thanks, DMW!

Disney dropped “A Christmas Story Christmas”. Great sequel to the ‘red Ryder / you’ll shoot your eye out’ classic.
