So many things to feel here. Through teary eyes, here are my first thoughts. Years ago I had a trip planned to go to my childhood home to help my parents pack up and prepare for their retirement and a move to Florida. My last trip home was canceled due to a direct hit by a hurricane. The destruction also meant mom and dad had much less to pack! I never had the chance to say goodbye to my home. But my folks moved to Florida, close to me. I found a greeting card that said “wherever I travel ,wherever I roam ,wherever you are ,will always be home. “ And I realized it didn’t matter about the house , my mom and dad were my Home. Fast forward 35 years, dad died in 1992 and mom just passed this October. I am a 59 year old “orphan”. It’s a strange feeling. I’ll be 60 at the end of the month!! Yikes, a whole other set of emotions.

… and I’ll turn 75 in 7 days! The only thing it means to me is that I’ll be in a different age group for races!

Congrats Dave. Yes, it's fun going into a new age group. However, I think you will find it difficult to find races with 5 year age groups over 70. I am in my mid-80s and find that most races only go to 70-99! It's one reason I love the Rock 'n' Roll series has 5 year year groups in the 70s and 80s.

Though we have lived in our current house for over 30 years and raised our sons here, I still think of the small town I grew up in, in upstate New York as home. Still visit a couple times a year though I stay with my brother since we sold the family home when Mom died. One of the trips each year is for a nearby 1/2 marathon.

Last night, reading Niall Williams’ latest novel (Time of the Child) I came across this passage: … though like all small places it was confining, Ronnie had come to the understanding that for her it was also freeing, and she never wanted to leave it. This was home. More, with a conviction she knew could not be explained, she felt it was where she was supposed to be.

Wishing all peace and joy for the holiday season and beyond.

Home for me for 50 of my 55 years was a suburb in Southern California. The past 4.5 years it's been MN with an annual trip to Southern California. This year in MN it will be home as I have a supportive (of my races, job, etc.) boyfriend and family which reminds me of 2002 answer before when my Dad was the essence of holidays before his passing in 2003. Cherish the time with family during the holidays. I'm glad to be experiencing it again as the time between makes it all the more special now.

As usual Terrell you pack a lot in within a few potent paragraphs. Newton, Einstein, Homer, Baseball Diamond. I bet if you took a sabbatical you might come up with the "unified theory" that stumped Einstein...love, love, love all your musings. The one that struck my heart was making the moments in our lives "special" so they take residence within and resonate for as long as our memory remains. Kinda like Einstein who I believe said that life was either a miracle or not. He said he chose to live life as if it is all a miracle. I always wonder what our human experience would be with each other and our home ( Mother Earth) if we all chose the same path...?????

Home for me is still Smith Valley, Nevada. Mom and Joe made it that way. There never has been any place like it, even tho I've lived all over the United States. The old place where I grew up is not there anymore, nor do we own the "Flat" (250 acres--the last Homestead granted in the US by the government). It still exists and will never change. I've heard they grow weed on it now.

I make due where we are now in Oregon, but is not a place I want to be if I had any say in the matter. :) So glad you have a place you can go back to!

This so resonates with me. Most times I visit my parents - my first “home” with at least one other person in tow. But those few times I have visited by myself, it feels like stepping back in time.

Your comment reminds me that either of our daughters visit home, they will plop down in the bedroom (now an office/personcave) and start pulling photo albums out of the closet … to reminisce about life and times in the 80svand 90s.

Home is here in Coral Springs, FL … we are in this house 48 years, raised our kids here, took the kids to DisneyWorld enough that it was there we did our first half marathon, had my brother and sister-in-law spend the night when they would drive from Tampa for a cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale. My folks and my wife’s folks are buried in Miami where my wife and I grew up (we met in our early 20s). We have relatives in Tampa, In Georgia, in New Jersey, in New York, and in Pennsylvania … but home is here!

Yes, home is just a concept. I have lived in at least 15 different places. When I was young, home was with my mom and dad. When I got married home was wherever my wife and I lived. Moving that much was challenging at times, but we found new adventures and new friends at each place. Memories and friends that we will cherish as long as we live. We travel a lot and it is always nice to come home.
