Relatable … we had them (our two daughters) for 18+ years and sent them off to college, hoping that not necessarily all but at least some of what you taught them sunk in. We have been fortunate to have maintained good relationships with our daughters, observing their lives evolve through twists and turns.

That's so great to hear, Dave! I hope to have the same kind of lifelong relationships with our kids that I've had with my parents. Love, love hearing this.

So many themes here seemed to relate to that over-arching theme of relevancy that I wrote about, and you commented on...and also speak to the notion of being "relied on" as a means of preserving relevancy--I can see from this beautiful essay--it's tricky....and also has to carry a certain measure of grief. Lovely, as always...

Lovely piece. I dropped my daughter to college this summer and am strongly feeling the passage of time.

And so it goes. . .You find out how good you've been as a parent when you are older and your kid helps you through the farmer's market cuz you're having a hard time walking. . . your kid is there giving you a hand to get through the crowd. Works both ways! :)

Weather finally cooled off. . .were down in the 60s again. Surprise, surprise. . .I have 3 tomatoes getting ripe on one of my volunteer plants! :)

Love hearing that the temperatures there are cooling, Nilima! (What's a "volunteer" plant, by the way?)

oh, volunteer plants are ones that come up again from the previous season. I had tomatoes galore last year and did not get around to planting new ones this year. I cleaned the bed, but must have missed some on the ground. One or two plants popped up this spring--my daughter told me. I walked out the other day to look at the beds, and there they were, getting ready to be picked when ripe! My mom and dad always called them volunteers. . . in their case, it was watermelons and pumpkins. . .sometimes tomatoes. Gardens can be fun. . .lots of surprises. Same thing with the dill and cilantro. Heirloom seeds last forever.

Cool and rainy this morning. getting back to Oregon weather!!
