Races you'll love running + recommended reads
Morning, friends! 👋
First, I know I’ve been in your inbox a lot this week, so please accept my apologies if it feels like I’ve been sending you too many emails — that’s something I’m becoming increasingly sensitive to myself, and am giving a lot of thought to how and when I’ll be sending to you in the future.
The reason I sent a lot this week is that I’ll be taking next week off for one last vacation of the summer with my family, and I want to be able to be present with them and get a little “off the grid.” I’ll be back in action starting the week of August 12, so I won’t be gone for long!
In the meantime, I hope you have a fantastic first full week of August and get some great runs in. When I get back, I’m considering a couple of changes to when and what I send in the newsletter:
Reducing the frequency of the race and recommendations newsletter from weekly to either every other week or monthly, and making each issue extra-special. (Sometimes I feel that weekly may be too often.)
Spending more time on essay-focused and “encouraging words”-style newsletter issues, as I’m finding myself in need of those! Focusing not necessarily on length — even just 600-700 words can be plenty — but more on inspiration and encouragement.
That’s where my head is right now; as always, I’d love any feedback you have. Thanks so much in advance — feel free to share in the comments, or in a reply back to me.
Your friend,
— Terrell
🏃 To run
Blueberry Cove Half Marathon
Tenants Harbor, Maine | Sunday, August 25, 2024
Enjoy the tranquil, peaceful beauty of Midcoast Maine and raise money for the locally based 4-H camp and learning center at this late-summer race, set here along the gorgeous rocky St. George peninsula that looks out into the harbor from which the town gets its name. Known perhaps best for the lighthouse that sits out on Southern Island just offshore, Tenants Harbor is a place where boats outnumber cars — and where you’ll run along winding roads with views of the ocean crashing against the beaches and rocky shorelines, with “quiet coves, gentle hills, and few houses.”
Fox Valley Marathon + Half
St. Charles, Ill. | Sunday, September 22, 2024
Named for the region of Illinois the Fox River runs through, the Fox Valley races offer a mostly flat and fast course between the towns of St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia, all of which lie roughly an hour’s drive from nearby Chicago. Far from the “windy city,” runners can expect a tranquil, peaceful run along the tree-shaded streets and running, walking and bike paths that parallel the river. Scenic and shady, the course takes you along paved trails and past waterfalls, over bridges and through small towns, all on the way to the finish line back along the Fox River, which organizers say you can see coming from a mile away.
