For myself, I do not run when there is ice or lightening. With the wind chill below 0 here, I realized that wind chill in the winter and heat index in the summer determines if and when I run. I do have a great treadmill that is built for marathon and half marathon runners.
Not generator a cold weather fan at all, but will run outside so long as the wind chill is above 15. With that said, there’s something very compelling about running in the snow - it’s so peaceful. I feel like I’ve entered into a new world for a time.
I am not a winter person! We could easily not have cold weather as far as I am concerned. Sunny here in Oregon, but there is a cold advisory for weather down to 25 degrees in the Willamette Valley. Finished my 2 million meters rowing today. . .one day ahead of my challenge which was for 20 days in January. I don't get another pin until I reach 5 million meters! Seems impossible, but who knows? It takes almost a year to do 1million if one is consistent and goes at a moderate pace.
I've been out in cold weather when we lived in ND. It was enjoyable down to a -20 if one was active. Afraid I'd have to pass on -54 unless I was a bison!
I used to be a consistent winter runner and cross country skier. I would be out in even the dumbest conditions. Since retiring from competitive sports I am now a fairer runner and skier: like today at -17F we walked 1/2 hour and then headed for coffee and breakfast. PS. I once did a two week winter camping trip where the high temperatures were 0 and the lows -35. Like I said Dumb. 😧
I currently live in MN but with the temperature (both meteorological and political), I run inside as it's safer as I type this. Before this year started, I would run weekly with a group outside, but for the most part the treadmill.
It's so strange to see these pics and be involved in such conversations as I swelter through days of 32 degrees celsius and 85% humidity. Yesterday's long run was a sweaty struggle.
I have never experienced running in the snow and have never worn snow shoes but would love to give it a go. That said, I'm not a big fan of the cold.
I have missed the last three scheduled runs for one reason or another so I have to get out tomorrow morning. I hear that air temperature should be somewhere around -9. At least the wind will be done. I am sure that I will end up cutting the run short but I need to get out there. At least it is better than Chistmas eve a few years back, that run was -17 windchill and 6 inches of fresh snow.
As long as the roads are good and it is 10 degrees or higher, I run out doors. They do a phenomenal job clearing roads here in Maine. We will be dumped on Sunday and early Monday, so I will use my basement treadmill. There was a time when I'd run on snow, etc. but that ship has sailed:)
In my younger days, the cold didn't bother me. I even trained for a marathon in the Buffalo, NY, snow. Now, at 76, cold bothers me, and my health is not what it used to be, having survived three types of cancer. I hate treadmills (always afraid I'll fall off and even wrote that into one of my scripts). I am ok running outside here in the Panhandle of FL in the 40s, but prefer the 60s. Cold rain or snow (on the rare occasions it occurs) is not for me. I ran in DE in a snowstorm, just to say I did about ten years ago. I ran here in a 40-degree rain and caught pneumonia, although it helped me discover I had leukemia. I have run marathons, about 12 years ago, in driving 40-degree heavy rain in NH and a 17-degree wind chill in DE, which was right before I was diagnosed with lymphoma.
I don’t have a treadmill or gym membership so outside it is. I guess I’ve figured out the right layering. Do I run in the cold and will run on snow but I don’t do ice. So that might mean no runs next week since temps here in the DMV aren’t supposed to get out of the twenties and freezing rain is being forecasted after the snow. Gonna be interesting. Stay safe everyone.
I'm in northern Ohio and we have had so much snow and ice this winter. I have asthma, so running outside when it gets too cold (below 20) doesn't work for me. It's hard to get an effective run in when it's so hard to breathe. I have had to do way too many of my runs on the treadmill this winter, and it's looking like I will have to do my last long run for Tokyo on the treadmill now too (sigh.) At least I am fortunate and have a nice treadmill in my basement, so all I have to do is go down there and get on it. Next weekend we are headed to Chicago to do the Lake Half Marathon on the Lakefront trail. Hope it's fun.
I also have asthma, but it has tapered off as I age (85). I used to use an inhaler (Bronchaid mist) just before a run in the cold weather or a hockey game. I also found out that it wasn't necessarily the cold, but the dry air could trigger it. When the Bronchaid was taken off the market, my pulmonologist gave me Albuterol. I have been fortunate that I haven't had to use that in over two years! Good luck on your half and enjoy!
Forecast for snow, sleet and unfortunately freezing rain for the weekend. My wife and I are prepared for “no electricity” here in Oxford, MS. for several days. Running and exercise are secondary issues for a few days. To misquote an old Willie Nelson song—walking is better than running away, but falling on ice ain’t no good at all.
great question for this calm-before-the-snowstorm friday! i'm in maryland and the frenzy over possible snow is so funny. the panic is real LOL. anyhow i don't love the cold but i'm not going not run because of it. the only time i won't run is on a day like tomorrow when its supposed to feel like negative numbers, and if it is icy out. the funny thing i've noticed as i get older that i'm not as cold as i used to be. 20 and 30 degrees does not affect me like it used to. anyhow, i'd say my threshold is 11 degrees.
last week we had a dusting of snow and it was actually fun running in it. had that nice crunch when you took your steps, and its so pretty when frosts the trees.
i went for a 9 mile run this morning because i don't think i'll be out in my neighborhood for at least a week! stay safe everyone!
I love winter running. I find it so peaceful and invigorating. I'm certain that I'm getting the cold plunge advantage by simply taking a jog in Central Park. I draw the line at about 26 degrees. After a snow is the best. The city clears the drive in the park and the view is a living postcard!

That ship has sailed for me too.
10 degrees is your threshold? Wow... mine is like 50. (But I'm soft 😀)

By the way, I spent almost 20 years in Atlanta (1976-1996) and ran 15 Peachtrees (1977-1991) and loved running around Stone Mountain.
Jim, your health journey has been an adventure, to say the least! How you've navigated the ups and downs of all of that, I've gotta know the story!

Right back at you, Jim! We have a similar forecast here... so I'm likely gonna be off the roads/trails for a few days.

I can’t speak authoritatively today. I’m stuck in Cozumel where it’s 85 degrees today.

This guy only visits cold places … I live in South Florida … looking forward to back to back halves on 2/8 and 2/15.
