I'm curious to know how things look from the road running side. I haven't done a road race in forever. I've been around trails long enough to remember when mere mortals could actually hope to get into Western States. And the Javelina Jundred entry fee wasn't as much as the GDP of some small countries. And when our local trail race was 3 distances in a 1 day event instead of 6 distances over a full weekend. I get that costs to put on races are increasing, but is it also true that the more people get into the sport the more those people are then viewed as cash cows? Is bigger, longer, flashier really better? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I have adjusted my goals for the remainder of the year. Was planning to run with you in the 10 miler, but we have decided to do a river cruise in Europe. Instead, I plan on participating in the Virginia Senior Olympics in mid-September. Planning on the 60, 100, and 200 meter runs. Also considering the 5K trail run and the Discus and shot-put events. It will depend on what my body tells me! Weather has been great here in northern VA so getting good mileage in! Heat and humidity returns next week - ugh!
My goal this yr is to finish the Marine Corps Marathon feeling strong and doing better than my standard 5:30- this will be my seventh time running the race, but first time that I’ve joined a group to train- so hoping to not hit a wall after mile 20! And another goal is to log 800 miles this year, the most yet since I started running seriously 10 years ago. Still on track for both :-)
My goal of the year is not race or pace. (Even if I do a race). My goal is to listen to my body. eat when I am hungry. Run when I feel ready and do not feel tied down to a schedule or mileage. I am trying to break free from being so type one. lol
My yearly goals are 100,000 feet of vert. And 1,000 miles run. So far I’m on track for both!
Racewise- I’m running the Great Trail Race 26k in Tahoe in September and the Golden Gate Classic 15k in the Bay Area in November. I’ve been saying “maybe I’ll run the Great Trail Race” for years so it’ll be nice to finally check it off my list.
First time to run Berlin. I have run Boston twice (2022 and 2024), London (2023) and New York (2024). I thought I only need to run six majors, but they moved the goal posts on me and added Sydney for a seventh. We will see how the body holds up and whether Father Time catches up with me. I turn 69 in October!
Making blueberry muffins this morning. . . so many sweet berries at the Farmer's Market! Produce galore!
Seems to me I'm signed up for Oct. 19th 5k in Atlanta, so we'll see you there!!
Reading Des Linden now, waiting til two weeks are up so I can get rid of this wrist brace. I promised to be good. . .even tho doing nothing drives me crazy!Teach me to fall down at an advanced age! I can still walk. . .so I'll be good for a few miles!
Dry here in Oregon. Yesterday, I found out we had 15 days over 90, which is unusual for central Oregon,
Atlanta is about all I have planned. . . I'll go from there. :)
Running the Berlin Marathon September 21. Depending on how I recover post the marathon, I may put a training half marathon later this year as a part of training for Tokyo Marathon next March. The goal of any training cycle is to get to the starting line healthy.
I am trying to stay motivated- luckily the heat has passed for a bit in NE Ga. I have Bar Harbor half in September followed by a half in Nasville in October. Need something fun in November then coast through the holidays!
The past week has been absolutely heavenly here where I live, just outside Atlanta. (Though it seems the sun is back for now!). Are you willing to travel in November for a race, or prefer to stay closer to home?
Still hot in South Florida. Taking it slow … next scheduled half is thanksgiving weekend. Depending on how 5K goes next weekend, maybe will do another half between now and then. Living up to my TIE-GID mantra: “take it easy - get it done”
In May, I suffered my first real running injury: a tibial bone stress injury and medial tibial edema (fun!), which thwarted my goals for the year. With that (nearly) behind me, my new "A" goal is to run Cuyamaca 100k (Oct 4) and earn another qualifier for Western States.
Thanks, Terrell! I've been rehabbing my leg for 3 months. We're probably 80% better, which is good. This weekend I stuck to the trails and ran a 10k on Sat, and 11 miles on Sunday. These were slow Z1-Z2 efforts. But they felt pretty good overall. Gives me hope for October.
I’ve slipped ‘off the wagon’ this year, so my #1 goal is just to get started again! (My last run was at the end of May.) Then after I’ve eased back in and gotten into a rhythm, I do want to shoot for a February half that has been on my radar for several years.
Strawberry Plains near Knoxville. I actually went up from SC to run it one year, but it had to be cancelled that morning due to snow! Now I only live 3 hours away in SW VA, but my running has been inconsistent since we moved here. I’ve been stuck on 12 states in my 50 state quest since 2019!
I must add that my goal race keeps shifting back! LOL. Originally it was going to be one or another in the Tri-Cities area (Kingsport/Johnson City/Bristol), then the Mayberry Half in Mt Airy, and now back to Straw Plains.

Just planned out the rest of my events for the year. I'm excited to have 11 more on the calendar to do!

This is fantastic, Teresa!!
Run 1,300 miles. I have 517.4 left to go! 🙌
That's awesome, Corrina!!

So nice, Erin! How do you do the 100,000 feet of vertical -- that's hiking/climbing, I'm assuming?
Yes, running + hiking elevation gain. Currently at 70,000 feet for the year!

That sounds so good, Nilima! Save me one! 🫐
Just one??? My daughter can eat 6 in one sitting! :)

I am always willing to travel- Do you have any recommendations?

Love that, Dave!

Wow, John -- those are seriously ambitious (and impressive!) goals. Love, love, love that you aim so high. How is the injury feeling now?

I tip my hat to you distance runners!
Thank you, sir!
Running Monterey half early November. Hoping for a 2:20 finish
Nice! Have you run it before?

I know what that's like! It's so easy to fall off and get out of the habit of running. What's the February half you'd like to run?
Strawberry Plains near Knoxville. I actually went up from SC to run it one year, but it had to be cancelled that morning due to snow! Now I only live 3 hours away in SW VA, but my running has been inconsistent since we moved here. I’ve been stuck on 12 states in my 50 state quest since 2019!

Got the NYC marathon in November, so all efforts are going toward that. I may run a half as part of that training cycle, but I haven't picked one yet.
Same for me. It will be my first time running in New York.
How awesome, Derek! Will this be your first time running the NYC Marathon?
Yes! I grew up in northern NJ, and I love the city, but I didn't start running until after I moved away.
