I'll go first 😃 I'll be going for my longest run in a while, part of the plan I'm following in our training for the Athens Half Marathon, which comes up almost exactly a month from now! I've been a little behind in my mileage, but I'm going to get done what I can between then and now, and hopefully come out strong out of the gate in Athens on Nov. 3 🏃🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Very nice!!! Wishing you the best, I have been switching up what I listen, music, podcast, back and forth. And I don't put my mileage voice prompt on and snack when I feel the need.

I am running my first marathon tomorrow, and I think I have ran it in my mind several times already lol. Everyone says to enjoy it, how do I do that?

Yay, awesome! You've got this!! My trick is to say, "this is hard, I love you" to myself and then bask in the awe of being able to do such things! Let us know how it goes. :)

The St George Marathon in southern Utah. It will be warm.

I ran St. George years ago - it is a great marathon! You are bussed out to the high desert and run back in. It was 32 degrees at the start - mesquite fires kept you warm (it was 60 degrees at the finish. It is a beautiful run through the volcanic cones, The finish is fast as the last 10K is downhill - easy to have a negative split. The race is well organized. Go out slow, enjoy the beautiful scenery and enjoy!

I don't know how the marathon is, but I used to live in Beryl, UT in an adobe house we built ourselves. Know the road to St. George well. Beautiful country, wished I still lived there! Have fun! :)

i just got back from my Friday run! it’s been a journey. I had a bad fall while running last December. Tripped on the sidewalk on a beautiful, sunny day, and broke my pinky (requiring surgery and 8 weeks in a cast), and smashed my front teeth (2 foot canals, 2 crowns). it was the most expensive and painful 2 seconds of my life!

So I’ve been coming back. lots of trauma, lots of pain, lots of going *really* slow.

i have 4 half marathons scheduled in four months - the first one is the running leg of the Wilmington 70.3 Ironman in 2 weeks.

so of course now I’m injured! Ab strain. went out today and did a five mile run/walk. felt ok.

I’m going to do this.

You are! You're an ironman just for getting back out there at all, Father Cathie! Seriously, I'm impressed!! What are the four halfs you have coming up?

Fr. Cathie Caimano's avatar

1. Wilmington 70.3

2. Outer Banks half

3. Crawlers half - this is our running group's 'unofficial' but very seriously mapped out and undertaken marathon/half that we do on the last Saturday of the year - so Dec. 28 this year.

4. Charleston half

what can I say? I like to run by the beach! My goal is to break 2 hours on *one* of them. It won't be Wilmington - I'll inevitably have to walk some because of the ab strain. But Charleston is where I broke 2 the only time - in 2019, when I was 52. 1:59:52! I feel a date with destiny there :)

I want to thank you, Terrell, for sharing the direct links for offering support for those in need in North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.

Definitely! I'll keep looking for more resources -- what happens in situations like this is there's almost always an abundance of places to help. (Which is great!) But I want to help find the places where your donation can go the farthest and get there the quickest. (I should add, people -- especially in N.C. -- are going to need ongoing help for an extended period of time, so I'll keep posting these. Don't be afraid to remind me if I forget!)

Hi, thanks for this thread. I ran my fourth marathon last weekend in Berlin - and my first as a 50-year-old! I couldn't believe how strong I felt - go, mid-life!

Looks like we might get some rain. Cool and cloudy. I'll get out for a walk today. Been cleaning the yard in preparation for the cold months. Will plant the fall crocus that seem to be growing in the fridge!Garden is still going strong. . . an over abundance of tomatoes ripening on the vine! Take care! :)

In a flash of brilliance, my wife and I decided to leave Tampa for 10 weeks. Our plan was to hike, run, and mountain bike. We rented a nice home close to downtown Hendersonville, NC. I did get some running in, and did a local 8k race.

Helene hit Tampa, and we went to bed knowing our home was safe. We woke up to high winds and torrential rain, which turned into power outages and volunteering for a few days at a local food pantry. Western North Carolina is awesome. While at the food pantry, good old boys would roll in with pick ups loaded with water and supplies to donate. Local restaurants cooked Al their food and gave it away. When I look at the Tampa subreddit and see the reports of looting and scammjng, and then see how everyone here works together, I realize how I’d rather be in NC than Tampa in a dystopian wasteland.

Good morning everyone! It’s been a minute since I sent a message but the last time I did it was to let you know I was running a 50K…my first. Well on Sept 20th I did it! I ran the Red Feather Lakes 50K here in Colorado and it was amazing! The weather was perfect and the trails were in great shape. Some stats: the elevation gain was 4400 feet peaking at 8800 ft above sea level, there was 1100 feet of elevation gain within the first 10 miles and the cut off time was 11 hours. I finished in 8:59….. I had set a goal of 8:30 not knowing what to expect and I missed that goal but first and foremost I wanted to finish. ✅ that box! I met some amazing people on the trails that I shared many miles with. At mile 23 my stomach turned sour so I sucked it up for the last 8 miles and pushed through. I definitely did not eat enough over the course of the day and that will have to be fixed for the future. At no point during that day did I EVER think of wanting to to quit. I just kept focusing on moving forward one step at a time! Biggest learn I’d say is that I can do this distance! I’m almost 60 and I know I’ll never win these kinds of races but that’s not why we run right? I honestly believe I have finally found my sweet spot! Next 50K goal? Bryce Canyon 50K next year…..🫣

Good advice, Karen. After seeing the latest issue of Ultra Running, I'm ready to give a 50K a try. Some of the older people that were featured were nearly my age or older. . . something to think on and I don't need to be nearly as fast as for road racing! :) Have to check out Bryce Canyon. . . pretty close to where I lived in Beryl, UT so I know the area and the weather!

Good for you, Karen! Wonder I could do the same at 77?? :) Keep runnin'. . . Bryce is beautiful. I lived close by there several year s ago when I was in my 40s!

Nilima, I absolutely believe you could do it!!! I picked a race with a generous cut off time knowing there would be sections where all I could do was hike! I didn’t use poles but in the future I absolutely will-my lower back was killing me by the time I was done due to all the hunching over, I’m guessing, from fatigue…..make it a goal, research it, and go for it!

Thanks for the encouragement, Karen! I,too, think I could do it (though next year I'll be 78!) Bryce is a good goal! From the looks of it, it is in September of next year-- a really nice time in that area. Currently, I'm walking (using poles because of the uphill here in Oregon) but a goal set for next year looks like It would definitely give me an incentive, which seems to be lacking where I am now living. Hmmmm. . . I'll research like you say--and being the kind of person I am, will probably do it one way or the other!
