Great essay! E.B. White's question, "When does a man quit the sea?" could serve as a metaphor for older runners like me who might question how much longer they will continue to run. The answer: as long as we can!
Now were talking! Your one day with your son is the story of my life! I grew up on a farm, spent my days out in the field or riding in a farm truck, milking cows twice a day and being there for lambing time. Driving a tractor. . .most kids did that when they were six! It is fun, but not for an entire day. . .or summer!
I can't look back on the slow days. Mine are still slow and filled with dreams, consequently, my love for running, cooking, gardening, and reading kid's books.
Oh, and wasn't the Dead Poet's Society the last great movie? Doesn't seem that old and very few measure up to it!
Out for a run. . .only 5K. Putting in training, though. Who can pass on an Electric Cookie Run? No medals, just cookies! It's a Christmas daydreamers dream come true. :)
Wellington, Nevada. . .in the North end of Smith Valley. An alfalfa farm. Looks out at the Sierras and Sweetwater mountains. Still there. Things have changed but not that much. Kids can hardly wait to get off to the big cities, but many of them come back. There is just something to country life. :)
As a preschool teacher/ child at heart..I love to listen to children's imaginations and dreamy stories. And yes, I provide many opportunities for self expression and artistry in the classroom. I think children and adults can become so bogged down by iPads, cellphones and the like. Bring able to enjoy the cloud formations and the sound of the breeze through the trees ..is a gift.
Good Morning Terrell. Thank you for reminding me it is ok to do nothing and let my mind wander. Like you said there is a pressure to constantly be pushing and grinding. I have always had a problem slowing down and taking a break. You are the man and it sounds like your son had a great time.
Terrell, thanks for sharing such a beautiful experience which has clearly touched us all. When you talk of children, parents, grandparents, old friends, E.B. White and father & son/ (daughter) bonding life doesn’t get much better than that! Funny how politics has so little to do with what truly matters…love!
As always you have so much meaning in your writing...........Terrell........#1 ....I love that you are taking your son to see his Grandparents........I love visits with my Grandson!!! #2 ......I know what it is to spend hours with a dear old friend and that also is a treasure.......and to have your son enjoy that visit is also priceless.........#3.......E.B. White wrote my absolute favorite book (scary, but at 72, I still have the book that I ordered in Grade School, Charlotte's Web)......it has become a favorite baby gift (today it is a package deal, movie and book).......your references through out your post had so much meaning and impact. Thank you!!!! Blessings to you and your family during this time of Thanksgiving!!!!
Thank you SO much, Marianne! I’m a huge fan of White’s too; he’s been a huge influence on me as a writer (remember Strunk & White?). And I love love love that you still love Charlotte’s Web. I think there’s a reason that story still resonates so much with us, right?

Thanks so much, Mark! My sentiments exactly 👍

"Now were talking!" I love that, Nilima! Where was the farm where you grew up?

That’s so, so true, Gara. One of the things I loved about this weekend so much was that it got us away from screens.

Thank you SO much, Brian!!! I think this time of year -- especially next week -- is the perfect time to slow down and contemplate too.

Great post! If I couldn't daydream, well, what's the point of waking up in th efirst place?
Exactly!
I always enjoy your stories, thank you. I feel like I’m right there with you. I had a nice easy run today.
