Races you'll love running + weekly recommendations
Morning, friends! ☀️
First, let me say how cool it was to see all the responses to Friday’s thread discussion on where we all are around the world.
We heard from readers in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington (State and D.C.) as well as Argentina, Canada, El Salvador, England and Scotland. (I think that’s all of them!)
That you took the time to share a little bit of your story is the coolest thing — and, it helps us get to know each other better and gives me a feel for where everyone is, which helps me brainstorm what to write and what to share with you in our Sunday issue each week.
For those of you who have recently signed up, either as a free or paid member — and here’s where you can become a paid member if you’re not one already — on Sundays I send out my weekly recommendations for races I think you’ll love running, plus the most interesting pieces on running (and tips for training) I’ve found over the past week.
When I find podcasts and video I love, I share those here too — like an interview I found this week with ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter, which I think you’ll love.
I hope you have an amazing run out there today — let me know how it goes, and keep in touch and let me know how your running/life is going.
Your friend,
— Terrell
🏃♀️ To run
🍇 Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon. Run through the heart of the Loudon County wine-growing region just over an hour west of the nation’s capitol, this beautifully scenic race run past rolling green hills and along tree-lined country roads, all starting from Doukenie Winery, a 500-acre farm nestled at the base of a mountain near the Virginia-West Virginia state line. After that, your 13.1 miles will meander along backcountry roads, pasat vineyards and the Virginia horse country just outside Leesburg, along a combination of paved roads and a few gravel roads in the second half of the race. And, you’ll be able to take in the wine festival at Doukenie after your run. Set for May 18, 2024.
🏝️ Whidbey Island Marathon + Half. A gorgeous run among the beaches, hills and farms of Washington state’s Whidbey Island, which lies just north of Seattle in Puget Sound. You’ll start and finish the race in Oak Harbor’s Windjammer Park, and from there make your way into its historic downtown area, and then along the island’s Marsh Trail to Scenic Heights, a 7 1/2-mile walking trail with a view of the town nearby. Stretches of the race feature runs along the waterfront and through farmland, with plenty of beautiful scenery to take your mind off the run. Set for April 21, 2024.
